Re: Running Pangs

Maybe pang isn't quite the right word, I just associate the discomfort with what feels like hunger pangs in my legs, notably the calves and hamstrings. Similar to quenching a thirst, I tend to go out real fast when my legs are tight and achy to get that "ahhhh" feeling of relief as fast as...

Running Pangs

Almost an anti-injury, having taken a few days off running I've developed what seems like a physiological need to run. All day, but most notably at night my calves have been aching, and it feels like the only way to get rid of the uncomfortable tightness is to go out and run. It's a pretty neat feel...

Re: The benefit of a reverse split - Olympic style

a quick start was a losing strategy against a conservative start with a strong finish. Assuming all racers have equal abilities. For all we know, many of the positive splitters could have had huge PB's. You'd probably get a better idea if this is true or not by comparing an individual's positive an...

Getting away with no speed work?

For a novice runner still working towards a decent base but heading into a race season, is there much difference between continuing with higher mileage or cutting back and adding speed work? Is substituting miles with speed like adding icing to a half baked cake?

Re: Distance vs. Speed

If you want to be a fast runner, focus on the 5km and 10km race distances for the first year, once you have some speed, you could move up the half, and then the year after, the marathon. In addition to dgrant's post above, this is great advice. Regarding training, I like Robbie-T's distance first a...

Re: Treadmill Accuracy question

Not really possible. The treadmill doesn't measure your distance, it just calculates it using the speed multiplied by the time. Not always. When a friend and I did a "treadmill marathon" last winter, we both had our fancy gym TMs set at 8.0 mph, yet his total distance was gradually openin...

Re: The Marathon, Gender, and Speed

I don't know that comparing the world record times is the right comparison to evaluate the differences between sexes. I disagree. Although using a specific record isn't the best approach, a range in and about those times isolates the differences between sexes by keeping all other training factors b...

Can we do a walking event too? (I won't be able to run yet, but have the clearance to walk - and this would help me get my a$$ out the door :) ) Of course! Make this your event and what works for you and hopefully you can get others to participate in it as well! I walk my dog a lot so you can count...

Hello Everyone! The idea is that everyone could give their own suggestions for tiny events/goals rel...

Re: The Lure of the Marathon

No matter the distance, you get out of a race as much as you put in. Marathons force you to give it everything you have, for the smaller races you have to do that on your own, and that can be very tough. eta: ugh... http://comeroundhere.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/nbc_the_more_you_know.jpg

Re: RW Core exercises- do 'em

One exercise you could try doing, and I was super happy once I was finally able to do it, is squatting on a stability ball. You'll feel like a million bucks and give everyone at the gym a nervous feeling like you're going to go flying any second. Give it a go on a Bosu ball first, and then when you'...

Your first year running times

Hi everyone! For my interest only, I'm trying to fix some of the traditional running time predictors ( McMillan ) to be geared towards first year/new runners who want to run some of the longer distances but do not yet have the best base. If you've ever used McMillan before using a smaller race as a ...
