Re: 5k 20 weeks away. Please help me with a training plan!
why don't you just try running 3 times a week until 7 weeks before race then do the plan. Make running a regular part of your life. Ya I was thinking about that too. Is there a certain mileage I should aim to run per week? Or just do 5k 3x a week? Hi sunshine, Please don't go from running 5K a week...

Re: Calf and foot pain
Hi newbie, I would suggest that you start with less than you know you can do and gradually increase from there. I suggest that you read about Chi running. It is mumbo-jumbo, but it makes you think about your posture and your foot plant. Landing heel first leads to tight shins. Landing on the forefoo...

Re: Gym sessions between runs?
Hi ripcord, Welcome to the site! I know that you asked for exercises to help with the hills, but I thought I should point out that running race speed training runs three of your four running days is not conventional. I haven't raced a 10K in over ten years and things may have changed, but I would ex...

Re: Fry-Day Friday
Fridays around our family is always burger and fry night! This confused me because I thought Friday was pizza night, but then I saw that you switched. You know you're in a rut with cooking when your family says no to meat sauce and pasta for supper because it's not Monday. They were very happy when...

For the record, I'm glad it did the race, but I will NEVER do a 50k road race again. Please hold me to it if anyone sees me wavering. I think when I say "NEVER", God smiles, and then guess what happens ... ;-) I enjoyed following your training and was anxious to hear that you finished. Co...

Re: Dreadmill incline to replicate hill training?
Also, some gyms have treadmills with a negative incline of up to -1% (I think). I am a treadmill runner and when I wanted a decline, I placed wood under the backend of the treadmill. For a while, I had mine set so 0% on the display was really -3%. I agree that steep hills can cause more problems th...

I'm sorry to hear that, but on the bright side for me, there is a lot better chance that it will get fixed, than if it was a problem at work.
Thanks Holly.

RM SQL error at work.
Today, before work, I was unable to access the running mania site. This is what the computer, running IE 7, displayed: http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/gbailey/RM_sql_error.jpg What does the error from work mean? " Well narr, ... it means you can't read the RM forum." :? Greg.

Re: Fastest swimmers paddle with "fork" not "oar"
That's the thing, though: you're not actually taking a handful of water, nor should you be directing it down the center-line of your body. That's the way we were taught 30+ years ago. A different analogy is that you are pulling your body past your hand. Just like in golf and baseball, the motion or...

Re: Fastest swimmers paddle with "fork" not "oar"
I guess what I'm trying to get at is a relaxed hand is probably your best bet (so, something to NOT think about). I don't "get" this. I can feel (in my mind) the hand being relaxed coming out of the water, but once it enters the water again, isn't it purposefully taking a handful of water...

Re: Sunday - don't be a fool!
I had a nice run with the Running Room group today-- they were doing 23K but I cut it short at 16K. I wouldn't normally even do that much the day after a 15K race, but I felt good today and wanted to get out (I get bored on Sunday mornings if I don't run ), and I won't be able to run with this grou...

Re: Swimming...
I learned to swim as an adult. I read "The Science of Swimming" by James E Counsilman. I "knew" how to swim before I took lessons. I also bought all the manuals for the various levels of badges right through to life guarding, but I only certified to Bronze Medallion. Unlike some ...

Re: 27 year old man dies running Toronto marathon
Donald Redelmeier, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, examined records from marathons where there were 3.3 million participants over a 30-year period. There were 26 deaths. That’s a death rate of one in 126,000 – roughly the same as the death rate in the general population. State...

Re: Good article about hydration
There are lots of misconceptions about how much we need to drink in hot weather and what level of dehydration is dangerous. Many of us are actually OVER-hydrating; a certain amount of dehydration is normal (and temporary) after running long distances, even up to as much as a 5% loss of body weight ...

Re: Tips for hydrating, etc. for an evening race
I'm doing a race on Friday evening, about 7:00. Either 5K or 10K, but I'm leaning toward 10K. I've never raced in the evening and I'm wondering how to best manage my food/liquid intake during the day. I suspect I over-hydrated again before my 10K on Sunday, drinking over a pint of fluid (a grande c...

Re: Reality check
For best results, consume one POWERBAR GEL Carbohydrate Electrolyte Blend with 475 ml of water every 20–45 minutes during activity. That's a quote from the PowerBar website. Let's do some math... 5 hours X 60 minutes/hour = 300 minutes 300 minutes X 1 gel / 20 minutes = 15 gels 15 gels X 475 ml wat...

Re: Reality check
Slight hijack, but...do you guys take in the same amount for all training runs as you would on race day? E.g., La, would you take 3 gels for a 18k run (or I guess 2, since you wouldn't take one at 18k...just at 6 and 12k)? Or do you wait until you get into higher mileage before worrying about it? I...

Re: Reality check
I've heard narr's advice before about drinking sports drinks instead of gels, but it always confuses me. If you really need to have enough water with a gel to make a 7% solution, then you need just over 500mL of water with each gel. I was recommended to take 2 gels per hour, and I know of people th...

Re: How little training would you do?
This is going to be a philosophical post. Apologies in advance. The question is: how much of your training is "fun"? So I guess the question boils down to: given you would still improve, or at very least not lose any fitness, just how little training would you do? Discuss. I've been follo...
