Re: Boston 2018

2. Yuki, the men's leader, was so close behind Des. I noticed when he turned onto Hereford that's where he passed Krista. He passed Sellers (the 2nd place woman) along Boylston. They never even mentioned her name, though they did mention Krista coming in 3rd. It was her 2nd marathon ever, and she's...

It was actually even more than that! Over four minutes - amazing. It’s hard to believe how much ahead she was at the end, as so many top runners were struggling.

Or Desiree who waited back with her at the port-a-potties to help her get back into the pack... then goes on to WIN THE RACE!!

We also don't know if it was just a pee break.

Re: Boston 2018

I was watching while doing my run on the treadmill-- what an exciting race! So happy for Des Linden-- I was crying watching her finish. Also really happy for Krista-- earlier in the race it didn't seem like she had a chance at the podium, and the announcers were never covering her-- I had no idea sh...

Re: I need a speed work refresher!

She's changing it because of feedback she's received from past participants that they weren't able to pace themselves effectively for a 1-mile interval. Also, increasing by 1 mile every week was too much of an increase. I think we're starting with 6 and increasing to 8 (we only have 3 weeks of spee...

Re: I need a speed work refresher!

The length of intervals and ratio to rest depends so much on what you're training for and what the desired effect is. For example, if someone says "mile repeats" they may be talking about something like 3 x 1 mile with 0.5 mile recovery at 5K pace, or they might mean a marathon workout lik...

Leadville 100 - good podcast race report

I just started listening to a podcast called "BibRave" produced by two runners in Portland, OR and billed as covering "all things running and racing". It has been going for a couple years now, and I have been listening to some back episodes. Most episodes are one hour, and usuall...

Re: Garmin Forerunner Vs Garmin Vivoactive

When you're ready to buy, I also recommend GPSCity.ca (assuming you are in Canada - I think .com is the US partner site) as their shipping is fast, their prices are competitive, and you can even get older/refurbished models from them if you don't want to drop a lot of $$ on your first watch. Anothe...

They Forerunner and Vivoactive both have several different models with a wide range of prices-- ranging from about $100 to $600 or nore. Many are very good-- the Forerunners are marketed mostly as running watches, and the vivoactives are marketed as "activity trackers", but both can be goo...

Found a place for them! On a related note, if you're at a race or race expo, and you see any of the African elites hanging around, go say hi. I've met a bunch of Kenyan guys, and they are always super happy to chat and make a friend. I think our Canadian nature is to leave people alone and let them...

We are pretty tight here that weekend (if my kids ever actually move out, I could consider things like this ;) ), but I will put it out on my FB page to see if any locals can help out.

Erin- do you have this as a FB post that I can repost? Or should I just make a new one?

Re: Cyclists boycotting these brands...

Every little bit counts. And there are lots of companies that are withdrawing their support for the NRA. Boycotting these companies will put pressure of them to also withdraw their support. Ultimately its the money that matters, and the NRA needs donations from supporters and corporate partnerships....

Wow- they did it! Gun-enthusiasts and hunters will probably still say it was a "knee-jerk reaction", but it seems it was far from that. https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/open-letter-to-mec-members-from-ceo-david-labistour Some parts of the letter: AN OPEN LETTER TO MEC MEMBERS FROM CEO DAVID L...

Dick's Sporting Goods will no longer sell semi-automatic weapons at all and will stop selling any guns to people under 21.

Nothing about whether or not they will stop selling products from companies that make the weapons, though.

Re: Cyclists boycotting these brands...

MEC is being very open with the public about their process in making the decisions whether to stop selling these brands. They are getting a lot of push-back from hunters who shop at MEC who don't feel that MEC has to stop buying from companies simply because they sell guns. But my question is: why d...

Good points! I also read a comment on that blog post (on FB) that resonated with me, which is that if you're currently overweight and have a poor diet, focusing more on eating healthy foods WILL yield results. But if you're already eating well (more whole foods, less processed foods, restaurant meal...

so to simplify it for the average joe, if we were to make an 80/10/10 rule--80% low, 10% medium, 10% high, that'd work for most people. Yes. And really, simplest is best for many! The take-away from the article is that no matter what approach people have taken to get to the best mix of training for...
