Dandies are great for hot chocolate, Sweet and Sarah are great for a dessert treat. Both are now available in Winnipeg without having to order online... HOORAY!

Re: Slimming down before a race
It's the weight loss and food industries that have made us believe that we have to eat constantly. No, it's called hunger. It's our bodies defense mechanism telling us to refuel. Your body can "learn" to feel hungry at certain times. It's a Pavlovian response. If a person experiences REAL...

Re: Slimming down before a race
Intermittent fasting is perfectly healthy. Intermittent fasting does not slow your metabolism. It's the weight loss and food industries that have made us believe that we have to eat constantly. You can still exercise while fasting, but I don't recommend doing endurance training while fasting. Also, ...

Natalie- I know your intentions are sincere but I can assure you that Narr is exaggerating when he says he eats a lot of sugar. :) Carrie- thanks for those book recommendations. Jen, I have no intentions. I specifically said that I had no way to make any judgment about the amount of carbs/sugar he ...

Re: vegan runners?
ETA: I was just reading a bit about how levels of cortisol (a stress hormone which impedes recovery) when more amino acids are released and when more sugar is metabolized. This may be what AP was referring to when she quoted Brazier's switch to a more alkaline diet. Interesting. Yes, this cortisol ...

Of course, being race director for two ultras too is almost as hard as running them

Re: vegan runners?
I have heard a lot about vegan runners who claim their recovery is better. I wonder what the physiological reason is for that, assuming you're comparing healthy diets both ways. I've been thinking a lot lately about going vegan but I think I'd have a hard time giving up dairy (personally- not for h...

Dwayne has run daily for almost 3 years. He works full-time and organizes a trail running series. He walks the dog and puts out the garbage. It's doable!
Edited to add: but not 40 km per day every day...

Re: Talk to me about Lulu bras....
I like the tata tamer for high impact exercise. Whenever I wear it all day, I find it uncomfortable. They do have a lot of great ones though... usually when you go to the store they're set up from the most support to the least support (at least at Polo Park).

Re: The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast
FWIW, I've been studying a lot of information about blood sugar recently. From what I can tell, if you wake up famished on a regular basis and can feel your blood sugar having ups and downs, your blood sugar and hormones are probably out of whack. The antidote is to cut out sugar (including simple c...

And I am both a dietary vegan AND an ethical vegan. I don't cook meat in my house, don't appreciate it if people bring non-vegan things into my house, and don't wear or use animal products (in cosmetics, etc.) But Colleen and I still get along  Still, when I go out to a non-vegan restaurant, I...

You can go from the Assiniboine Forest to the Harte Trail and run a little further. And if you're into it, you can cross the Perimeter at the end of the Harte Trail and run some more. I know someone who's done it...

Lemming Loop is your best bet next weekend at Beaudry Park.
And there IS a trail marathon coming next fall. Just in the planning stages but it will be happening. Stay tuned!

The first time I went to a Lulu was a Monday morning, Winnipeg, temp outside -40C. I was there for work and my scheduled meetings got canceled at 9/11 and 1PM So I had nothing to do until 3PM!!! There was a mall across from the hotel so :D I had great service the whole way around. A good balance wh...

Re: What Works??
ART and here is why. Back in 2006, the year I started running I slipped on some water waiting to start a "race". My already hinky knee decided that it really didn't like that and started acting up. It got to the point that I couldn't run, bend down, or even walk for more than 15 minutes w...

Re: Vegan/Vegetarian Athletes? Anyone?
I never cook anything. My point is: if you like to cook, fine learn how to cook vegan. If you don't like to cook, realize you don't have to in order to get the nutrition. Proper feeding of a vegan does not require alot of complications. I say this because alot of people say they think being vegan i...

Lentil Meatballs you say? I would like to know more... I'm trying to remember, as it was an improvised recipe. I think we used Big Ben's Lentil Burgers (Sarah Kramer's recipe) and rolled it into balls. Then we put it in the slow cooker with my old recipe for sweet and sour sauce. As I recall, it's ...

The vegan nanaimo bars I made were from Sarah Kramer's cookbook Vegan a Gogo . I'd share the recipe, but I don't have permission... unless you're my friend and you email me and I email you back, I guess. (Anyone on here a copyright expert??) Oh wait, I found a VIDEO of her nanaimo bars!!! http://www...

New questions! :) [I'm totally hijacking this thread, sorry!] What are your favourite upsides to being vegetarian/vegan? Feeling better, in general. I used to have bad acid reflux - gone. I used to suffer from a lot of congestion (which I attributed to random allergies) - gone. When I work out, I r...

Re: Pine mouth - warning!
Interesting. I've had metal-mouth before but never attributed it to pine nuts, which I eat quite regularly. Now I know I'm not crazy! (My metal mouth has lasted from 1-3 weeks. I ate regularly anyway).
