Quality vs. Quanitity (DIETFITS Study)

The headlines read: "The Key to Weight Loss Is Diet Quality, Not Quantity, a New Study Finds" (NY Times) https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/20/well/eat/counting-calories-weight-loss-diet-dieting-low-carb-low-fat.html The reality: "Yes, Calories Counted (Literally) In The Recent #DIETFITS...

Re: Cyclists boycotting these brands...

I saw that on Twitter yesterday (and re-tweeted it). I had no idea! It will inform my purchasing decisions, but if I already own any of their products it doesn't make sense to stop using them. I have an old Giro helmet that I don't use anymore. Good thing there are alternative brands for all those t...

Re: "What everyone gets wrong about endurance training"

so to simplify it for the average joe, if we were to make an 80/10/10 rule--80% low, 10% medium, 10% high, that'd work for most people. Sounds reasonable. I think it would need to be further qualified to say: 1) That you need to define how you're measuring intensity - is it by HR? Pace? Something e...

Re: "What everyone gets wrong about endurance training"

Ah, OK. The way he referenced the article didn't indicate that it supported more than just this claim, "examined the actual distribution of training intensity used by elite athletes across the full spectrum of endurance sports. The conclusion: The best in the world complete about 80 percent of ...

Re: "What everyone gets wrong about endurance training"

Good article. My only criticism is that he failed to cite his sources for the claims he was making about why his approach is the right one. he linked to one Norwegian study, but that was about the breakdown of workouts by elite athletes (not the science behind why they train that way). If you're goi...

First Tuesday of 2018

I'm starting a half-marathon clinic tonight. Hopefully this will kick-start my motivation to run again.

It just occurred to me that I took my very first clinic at the RR in January of 1999. That was NINETEEN YEARS AGO!!

Ottawa jogger in condo ad wins precedent-setting privacy fight

At trial, Waterbridge testified it wasn't the photographer's intention to capture individual people, rather the "environment, river, and geography." However, the judge didn't buy it. "The photographer was not just filming a moving river, he or she was waiting for a runner to jog alon...

Re: Winter... To run or not to run?

Bad footing will keep me indoors, so I generally play every run by ear, depending on that. I think your question is whether you can maintain your fitness level through the winter running on a TM (as opposed to outside): Yes! The TM might feel a bit easier because you're not fighting wind and hills, ...

Keep it up, you're doing great! Hills - the more you do them, the better you get at them. Don't worry about pace, just maintain a steady effort. Intervals - you don't need to do any all-out running, especially not every workout. You could pick one workout per week (maybe 5-6K distance) where you foc...

Re: Do you run in the rain?

I agree with Spirit. It depends on my mood or if I’m meeting people. Also, I don’t like starting in a heavy rain, but if it starts raining while I’m running then I’ll just keep running. Ditto. It's tough to get out the door when it's pouring rain. It's a bit easier if I'm meeting someone. If it sta...

Re: Montreal marathon cancelled...

For people who are traveling to the event, they'd want to be notified ASAP while there's still time to change their travel plans. Remember what happened in NYC in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy when they waited until late Friday to cancel (and everyone had already traveled to NYC).

I would like to try this. I do wonder how nut milk would affect the taste of the sauce though. You could add flour to the sauce to thicken it before adding the cheese. i actually made mac and cheese from scratch last night! Great creativity! Although I respectfully disagree about adding pesto. :lol...

Re: Shoe Lace Tying... Whaaaat

That's the "heel lock" or "lace lock" tying. I thought everyone did that on their running shoes. :) It's probably more common for women with narrow heels. Yup. All my shoes are laced that way. My feet go numb if I tie my laces too tightly, but for running on trails I don't want ...

Cauliflower Pasta Sauce

In search of a low-cal, creamy pasta sauce I came up with the following recipe. It's totally flexible. Basic sauce: 1) Boil a bunch of cauliflower* (I cooked about 2+ cups worth) along with 2-3 cloves of garlic in well-salted water. 2) Once boiled to a really soft consistency, drain it and put it (a...

I don't think anyone addressed this point, which occurred to me just now: "Rich" people also play golf and tennis; these are sports are also beyond the financial reach of "poor" people. Are golf and tennis players also motivated by pain? Well, besides the point that golf isn't a...

Re: Four things the fitness industry can stop arguing over

Yes, I read that a while ago. I saw a comment on another post similar to this one that talked about having a caloric deficit on a weekly basis (as opposed to worrying too much on a daily basis). That said, you have to track daily to know whether you are meeting the caloric deficit you desire. But th...

Re: Why are rich people drawn to endurance sports?

They talk about the main things being: having the time to exercise, having the money to buy equipment and enter events, but the more interesting thing (to me) is more about it being attractive to people who are in white collar jobs. I think that's a more valid correlation than simply income.
