Re: Garmin Forerunner Vs Garmin Vivoactive
They Forerunner and Vivoactive both have several different models with a wide range of prices-- ranging from about $100 to $600 or nore. Many are very good-- the Forerunners are marketed mostly as running watches, and the vivoactives are marketed as "activity trackers", but both can be goo...

Re: Kenyans looking for hosts for Vancouver Marathon
Found a place for them! On a related note, if you're at a race or race expo, and you see any of the African elites hanging around, go say hi. I've met a bunch of Kenyan guys, and they are always super happy to chat and make a friend. I think our Canadian nature is to leave people alone and let them...

Re: Kenyans looking for hosts for Vancouver Marathon
We are pretty tight here that weekend (if my kids ever actually move out, I could consider things like this ), but I will put it out on my FB page to see if any locals can help out.
Erin- do you have this as a FB post that I can repost? Or should I just make a new one?

Re: Cyclists boycotting these brands...
Every little bit counts. And there are lots of companies that are withdrawing their support for the NRA. Boycotting these companies will put pressure of them to also withdraw their support. Ultimately its the money that matters, and the NRA needs donations from supporters and corporate partnerships....

Wow- they did it! Gun-enthusiasts and hunters will probably still say it was a "knee-jerk reaction", but it seems it was far from that. https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/open-letter-to-mec-members-from-ceo-david-labistour Some parts of the letter: AN OPEN LETTER TO MEC MEMBERS FROM CEO DAVID L...

Dick's Sporting Goods will no longer sell semi-automatic weapons at all and will stop selling any guns to people under 21.

Nothing about whether or not they will stop selling products from companies that make the weapons, though.

Re: Cyclists boycotting these brands...
MEC is being very open with the public about their process in making the decisions whether to stop selling these brands. They are getting a lot of push-back from hunters who shop at MEC who don't feel that MEC has to stop buying from companies simply because they sell guns. But my question is: why d...

Re: Quality vs. Quanitity (DIETFITS Study)
Good points! I also read a comment on that blog post (on FB) that resonated with me, which is that if you're currently overweight and have a poor diet, focusing more on eating healthy foods WILL yield results. But if you're already eating well (more whole foods, less processed foods, restaurant meal...

Re: "What everyone gets wrong about endurance training"
so to simplify it for the average joe, if we were to make an 80/10/10 rule--80% low, 10% medium, 10% high, that'd work for most people. Yes. And really, simplest is best for many! The take-away from the article is that no matter what approach people have taken to get to the best mix of training for...

Re: "What everyone gets wrong about endurance training"
Good article. My only criticism is that he failed to cite his sources for the claims he was making about why his approach is the right one. he linked to one Norwegian study, but that was about the breakdown of workouts by elite athletes (not the science behind why they train that way). If you're go...

The title of the article is very click-baity, but it's a good article none-the-less.

Re: Spirit's Snowdrop Ultra 55
This is so awesome, Laura! So happy for you. You did it. It is definitely a lot more challenging for you to do this without a crew. The looped course makes the logistics easier than other ultras, but the psychological factor is so important. So many ultra reports I have read describe how the runner ...

Re: Do you run in the rain?
I don't like running in the rain when it's cold and dark like we have for much of the winter in Vancouver. So I will opt for the treadmill indoors at the gym on those days. Warm rain in the summer is nice for running.
I never wear a rain jacket while running.

I thought I remember seeing a study about this before. Certainly there have been lots of articles over the years, including about some running groups for recovering addicts in big US cities like New York, Boston and Chicago. http://boston.cbslocal.com/2016/02/04/boston-bulldogs-running-club-drug-add...

Re: Montreal marathon cancelled...
I was surprised that they cancelled five days before the race (doesn't weather change sometimes?) but it sounds like they got pressure from the city to cancel when they tried to increase medical staff, etc.
At least they have a decent cancellation/transfer policy for the would-be marathoners.

That's the "heel lock" or "lace lock" tying.

The eclipse was very cool- I watched indirectly using my pinhole projector. Very cool to see the image, even though it was in a box. Also - I was mesmerized by the patterns in in the shadows.
