Re: Sating Sunday

-13 here, not too windy. I ran about 5k on our ice-covered streets. Somehow, as long as there is a skim of squeaky snow over that ice, the footing is not slippery.

Re: New runner

Welcome to Running Mania! It sounds to me like you are making excellent progress--much, much faster progress than I made when I began. The general rule is to work on increasing distance/endurance first, then do a little bit of speed work. A good way to begin working on speed is to do a few "str...

Partly sunny and -9 here. I did 4.38k at WARP (winter average running pace). Tough work on ice and loose snow!

Re: Winter Wednesday

Better to post late than never for Wednesday! I had a short, difficult run on slush-over-ice roads yesterday. I did this after I shovelled the drive, then worked to chop out the 3 cm of ice that remained underneath the snow. So, it was a sort of a mixed cross-training workout.

I bravely ran 3.5k in rain/freezing rain before I gave it up. The streets were treacherous!

Hmm. I suppose I could write one blog a month. I can think of lots of topics; not sure how much interest they would be to others. All we can do is try; if it flops, well, we did our best!

Wow--thank you Holly for the effort and thought you've put into these changes. I think you can drop the sub-forums you listed, although there still may some use for the Classified (maybe just "Announcements" instead?) on occasion. I didn't even know there was a blog part of the RM site bef...

It's beautiful and SUNNY for the first time in weeks here. Nevertheless, no running for me: time for my periodic week off from running.

Not as bad as Alberta, but wintery enough: -5 with windchill to -12. Ran 5k then came home and shovelled the driveway.

Re: Snow day Monday

Today's run started out pleasant enough on soft, fresh snow. Very quickly, where the plow had passed, the streets were forming black ice even as I ran. Conditions became more treacherous as it was getting dark (as it does here around 3:30) and colder. I slipped 3 times in about a half-dozen steps! H...

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit

Many winters, I get plenty of strength training with a snow shovel. I don't think it is particularly enjoyable, however.

Re: Toothy Tuesday

toobusy, time to spoil your son with ice cream! I ran 5.6k today on our suddenly wintery-treacherous streets. I was thinking, while I ran, of how the arctic peoples have dozens of words for "snow." I feel like I've developed quite a list of terms for the lousy winter streets we have: black...

I agree with the advice given above, and it sounds like you are on the right road now. I know that my back originally caused problems in my calf...And it's true that you will subtly change your gait to protect something that hurts, thus causing yourself new issues. It is very frustrating! My physio ...

Oh, Spirit, I'm sorry to read about your busted half today, but curious to know the details. Nothing busted with me, but I'm resting and letting my problem toe recover from yesterday's 11.66k run--longest I've done since September, 2013.
