Re: Man dies at Krispy Kreme donut challenge in U.S.

(Looks like I'll be disagreeing with everyone this weekend...) I'm not willing to classify this headline as click-bait or poor journalism. First, it's a running magazine, so there wouldn't be a story about a heart attack that took place riding a bike, climbing stairs, playing hockey etc. Something ...

You gotta wear pants when you're running outdoors. That doesn't work for everyone.

Re: Best running magazine

I have the subscription for Runner's World and I buy the other magazines as well. Running Times is my favourite because I think they have the best articles. The downside is that they are more expensive to subscribe. uh-oh https://www.facebook.com/RunningTimesMagazine/" onclick="window.open(this.hre...

Re: Pistorius charged with murder!

One thing that makes this VERY different than anything we know, is that here in and in the US the prosecution cannot appeal a conviction - only the defense. At least that's my understanding. Well that and the whole jury system thing.  You are correct about the US but not Canada. The crow...

Re: Pistorius charged with murder!

I think it's a case of SA law being different than Canadian law. Even if it was an intruder, it didn't matter. In Canada, you could claim self-defence (I didn't know it was her, I thought it was a burglar!), whereas in SA you can't. None of this makes a lick of sense. If you can't claim self-defenc...

Re: GPS Overestimates Distance Traveled

According to the app I use , this mornings 13.50 Kilometre run took 38 minutes @ 20 kilometres per hour , on my watch it was closer to 1 hour 10 minutes. That's not normal behaviour for a GPS watch- check your settings. The time should be the elapsed time and shouldn't be shorter. No , it's more&qu...

Re: Marine Corps Marathon Issues Lifetime Ban to Runner

Hard to imagine the desperate sort of person who would cheat their way to Boston. Hard to run with the weight of a cheater on their shoulders. It is a sad, shallow and hollow thing. Can it really feel good? They don't think of it like that, because they just want to run Boston-- the qualifying part...

How is it different?

That's like saying that paying someone to write the MCAT for you is different than taking the test yourself but cheating while writing it.

A friend of ours rides his motorcycle all over North America and has a SPOT. I have been able to track him on his adventures all over, even in very remote areas. They have a promo on now: http://findmespot.ca/SPOTOFFER/lander.php?utm_source=google&utm_medium=text&utm_term=spot%20satellite%2...

Re: GPS tracking/safety device?

I've never heard of a runner carrying one of these. I know a bunch here, trail runners. There's always a potential for getting lost in the mountains, and cell phone batteries don't last long. Lots of people here have the SPOT tracker. I've thought about it but I don't want a monthly fee. If/when I ...

I was thinking "I've never heard of anything like this for runners" and then I realized that I was thinking about it wrong. To find the right product you have to think like a stalker. What would I buy if I wanted to secretly keep tabs on someone? http://gps-tracker-review.toptenreviews.com...

Are we sure that everybody's Garmin wasn't just inaccurate? Because I think that's the cause of races seeming long. Either that or failing to run the shortest tangents.

I do the opposite - usually 2 mins hard 4 mins easy (or thereabouts). But hard would be "falling off the back of the treadmill" hard (15-17 km/h) so 2 minute intervals is enough.

Re: GPS Overestimates Distance Traveled

The Ranacher team’s results do not mean that measuring the lengths of complex courses by GPS is futile. They point out that moment-by-moment GPS velocity measurement is not subject to the same sources of error, so that calculating distance traveled by integrating velocity should yield reasonably ac...

Re: Women running and safety

A bit of a disturbing thread. Any sharp edged weapon is potentially lethal regardless of size. Any sharp knife can sever a carotid artery or femoral artery, and a person will bleed out in seconds or minutes. If one is waving a knife around randomly as a deterrent it could as easily catch someone in...

I think its a mistake to focus on devices and not on training. If you've never handled a knife before, is it really smart to pull out a knife on another person. Who might be either (a) experienced in knife-fighting and/or (b) full of meth? Similar for bear spray. I'm 100% percent in favour of defend...
