7km consisting of 6 x 3 min higher intensity efforts. This was after an appointment with an ophthalmologist where my pupils were as big as dinner plates.

That's so great for you Jesse! You certainly show that hard work pays off, and that there is not such thing as a bad time to run.

Re: Future of RM
I could coordinate instagram, if you need a volunteer for a RM account. Isn't that what IronColl was offering? Sorry, I misunderstood. No worries, we can have more than one person. I have a few ideas rolling around now.... give me to the weekend. i am happy to share the duties with other people. I ...

Re: Future of RM
So going back to the idea about social media, I'm happy to act as "Runningmania" on Instagram and like and comment on people's runs who hashtag, but also search around and do that for open public profiles. Is someone willing to make an account with a picture and a bio that links to the for...

If you think the medium is finished, you should take a look at Slowtwitch; it's far from dead. What am I still here? Morbid curiosity I suppose. What have I contributed? Dunno really, but I do know that my journals were amongst the one or two most read, in terms of views per post, so I must have co...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
In The Power of Habit Duhuigg talks about his habit of going for a cookie every day at 3PM. When he finally analyzed it, what he was actually craving was a break from work to go to the cafeteria to chat with his colleagues. I used to have a sour jujube craving every afternoon, but I discovered that...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
Then addressing the issue of why has the attitude changed is important. You used to be able to expose yourself to chips and now cannot. Why? You don't have to be anxious but you are still avoiding the activity for some reason. If you are avoiding the chip aisle for now, but are working on the tools ...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
I did the quiz. I'm a questioner. That's totally me as I ask a lot of questions and like to do research. No surprise there. No surprise for me either, I'm an obliger. Haha not a surprise! If there is no will power or power of will you'd need to figure out why, and that's not necessarily an easy tas...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
So avoiding it is better than learning the skills to deal with the situation? Not a perspective I can get on board with. ETA - not something I can get on board with as a strategy right from the start. I can think of 2 situations where I use avoidance as self preservation because even though I have ...

thanks, that helps me track down the studies. is he the one who argues that willpower is a finite resource? I think I mislabeled it as a "finite resource" because that implies that it can't be replenished. What I meant to say is that you can't keep drawing on it without replenishing it. o...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
The other comment I have related to sustainability is the role of willpower (read: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhuigg and Slim By Design by Brian Wansink). Studies show that willpower is not like a muscle that you can exercise (i.e., the more you do it, the better you get at it). It's more like ...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
I listened to the podcast yesterday on my long run. While I couldn't imagine following her nutritional regime, I didn't find it offensive. It seemed like it took her a long time, and a lot of work, to figure out what worked best for her. I think that's one of the take home messages, it took a long ...

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
The way intermittent fasting was described I didn't think it was as bad as it seemed. I tend to go 15 hours between eating but I've never considered it fasting. I think about fasting as days without food, not less than a 24h period. I am interested in the science she talks about so I have the book r...

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit
Kettle bells are great and I find them to be silent and deadly. Take the swing. The first 10-15 seem easy but getting up to 50 is hard because of the leg and cardio endurance. I use them about every 3rd week in the HIIT class I teach.

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit
Here's another article written as a rebuttal to the initial article. One of the things he talks about is how to define "fit." If I had to pick one way to measure fitness, I'd use METs, short for metabolic equivalent of task. One MET is the level of exertion required to sit in a chair and ...

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit
Doing one type of exercise will make you more fit at that exercise and provide other limitations. There are more aspects to fitness beyond cardiovascular and doing things like strength training and stretching with cardiovascular activity makes you fitter overall. Of course you are fitter doing somet...

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit
I agree with the article. Everyone has a different definition of what being fit is. Running makes you a better runner. I like this as a definition of fit: "And as we all know, a strong body is the number one way to prevent injuries, increase metabolism, burn fat, and stay mobile and functional ...
