Re: Future of RM
I'm guilty of not getting on here very frequently any more, and honestly it's because I'm rarely on a desktop other than at work, and I find forums clunky on mobile (even with an app). The only reason I check in to see how old friends are doing - both in training and in life - though I do keep up w...

Re: Ottawa treatment for crackly knees?
Thanks for your reply - I do take fish oil with some consistency, but I haven't tried any other supplementation. Have you tried other supplements? i know people on this board have had great things to say about glucosamine - just found a link to an old thread (hey, ultraslacker, it's you!): ht...

Re: Ottawa treatment for crackly knees?
this is an interesting question - i have the same crackling and, like you, i find it disconcerting because it sounds like the movement is eating away at my knee cartilage. everything i've read says that crepitus is generally harmless unless there is pain associated with the movement. is that what yo...

How does this helps RM? I don't know....but if people examine their strengths and different personalities we can work together to make it work. Use our differences to build instead of tearing down. i can contribute (informal) reviews of science and the research literature, where appropriate. And we...

Re: Future of RM
There are plenty of spaces available for people who want to get into p!ssing contests. Every space (virtual and physical) where people meet has a culture. That culture develops based on what is and isn't accepted by the majority of members of the community. RM's culture has developed into on where ...

Re: Future of RM
So going back to the idea about social media, I'm happy to act as "Runningmania" on Instagram and like and comment on people's runs who hashtag, but also search around and do that for open public profiles. Is someone willing to make an account with a picture and a bio that links to the fo...

that's amazing.
i actually didn't realize that you could set a world record within a race like that - at least not officially. interesting! now i know.

Re: Around the Bay - Who's in....
dee, this story reminded me of the time I was struggling around 20K and saw you by the side of the road and you gave me a lift back to the start. I posted a DNF that year as I did NOT cross the finish line. yes! i actually don't think it's uncommon - i know a friend who got a ride once, as well. ce...

Re: Around the Bay - Who's in....
It does seem that many people do not get why cheating in races in this way would be a big deal to other people. It does not fall in the same category as cheating on a test, for sure as in, you think cheating on a test is worse than cheating in a race? or just that they're different things? for me, ...

Re: Around the Bay - Who's in....
1. Unfortunately the real issue has not been adressed and still remains which is HOW did Deck get from the 15km mark to the finish line and enter the very secure finish line to receive a gold medal she did not earn!!! the local newspaper addressed this one - she got a ride from a friend to the fini...

Re: Around the Bay - Who's in....
I'm intrigued and flummoxed. Besides the question of why someone in that situation would cross the finish line, how could anyone think it's okay to wear another person's chip??!! yes, perfect adjectives!! the double chip thing is so bizarre, too. i can't even think of the motivation (i.e., it's not...

Re: Around the Bay - Who's in....
i'm so intrigued by this cheating story - on one hand, i appreciate that she answered questions (some people would just say no comment). on the other hand, i feel like i have so many questions left. i've done the bay enough times to know that you don't have to cross the finish line to find your fami...

also this one: http://danariely.com/2012/08/15/understanding-ego-depletion/ Here's the Pubmed abstract on the concept of ego depletion: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20565167 Thanks for that. I tracked down the full article but found it hard to get through the jargon. But the methods are solid!

Re: Julie Miller now running ultras
to continue the analogy, a person doesn't need to be banned for life from having a relationship again, but full disclosure is important so that the next potential relationship-participant can make an informed decision. And again, the assumption is that the cheater has admitted they did it, are remo...

interesting to compare her story with the 'related' article about the woman who was banned for doping. this is an interesting question. every time i type out an opinion, i change my mind. but i guess i agree with the race director who said he wouldn't be comfortable not allowing her to race. and i h...

my running shoes are 1/2 size bigger than my regular shoes.
if they're on sale 70% off or something and only my 'regular' size is available, i can make do. but it's not ideal.

Re: "The Secret Life of Fat"
Just came across this great article about metabolic rate. Lots of great links to scientific studies. https://examine.com/nutrition/is-my-slow-metabolism-stalling-my-weight-loss/ nice summary. i've got the 'cold exposure' part down pat these days. i really need to work on building muscle mass....
