I am kicking asses during the group training sessions. Giving the fact that I don't ride 2 hours in the Gatineau Park before the workout, I have much more energy for the speed workouts, both on the bike and run. I am so kicking asses that I don't even have to pretend I am kicking Eljeffe's ass to mo...

Re: Duathlon training
1) Do you concentrate on training with one sport at a time (i.e running for several weeks/months and then cycling for several weeks/months or do you combine them (i.e. run one day, cycle the other) or do you cycle and run on each training day? You should not train at only one sport at a time but som...

I agree with this strategy. I have a friend who is an Elite. (PB: 8:44 at NZ IM)...I've never thought to ask him what his change of clothes strategy is. But I think in your case "comfort" might be an important key. Who's your friend? I have met or know quite a few elites... And FWIW, my own strateg...

I ran Ironman with Newtons. You'll be fine. Don't waste your time changing clothes in T2. You need those seconds/minutes. Oh, you could wear your one piece if you peeing on the bike. You will be full of sweat, sunscreen, dust, Gatorade, flies and other insects. If you are well hydrated, your urine w...

Why wouldn't you just ride in the full lane? You're taking up the same space and instead of making all the cars in 2 lanes have to go around you, just the people in your lane are sol. Because it's traffic jam and cars are not going any where. They are not going around me, I am going around all of t...

 Great. I'll get a ticket for riding on the sidewalk when I get off the Portage Bridge on Wellington during my morning commute. I use the Chaudière Bridge. When on Wellington, I ride my bike on the white lines between two car lanes. More than enough space there. No need to ride on the sidewal...

It's the same for the triathlon age group world championships. I never tried to qualify but it would have been easy to make the "team". I rather enter prestigious race than participate in a wide open world championships. If I was a duathlete, I would race Zofingen or something like this. This does n...

16 hour finishers don't necessarily train less or more than 9 hour finishers. That's doesn't answer my question-- I'm just genuinely curious of how long people train, both faster and slower people. These days, I go up to 30 hours week but when I am also working, it's usually up to 20-22 hours a week.

It would require essentially full-time training, though-- more than what most people even think of as "full-time training." I'm not sure it would. What do you mean? What I meant was that I don't think you could do much more in your life if you were preparing for such an event. My coach worked full-...

Eric - many many people call the end of an Ironman a death march - surely you must have seen that when you volunteered in 2006?! Also, by zombies, I really mean zombies. Imagine in a dark forest. No lights except from the head lamps which look like a zombie cyclops eye. Like near Ironman cutoff tim...

At some point...it's just...weird. Pathologically weird. Why? It's over three days! Any trained athletes (excluding back of the pack athletes) do that and still have a decent sleep every night during the race. My coach ran a hilly 100 milers. A lot of runners came in over 24 hours. During the night...

March of the living dead
I was the handler for my coach at the Vermont 100 milers last week-end. I also walk/ran 10k with him. This is just too much. It's like a horror movie. There were zombies walking everywhere in the dark night. Where's the fun? I am okay with ultra but it should be 100% runnable like the JFK 50 milers ...

I've eyeballed that one and would love to make it my first 50 miler, but that distance is serious business and I wouldn't even think about registering until I had 12 or 15 months of serious (300-450km) ultra training under my belt. Don't scare me! I am planning to run it with Ironman training and m...
