So, in the other thread, I mentioned we would be aiming for a top half finish as the basic training standard. Ideally, the "team mindset" should be to train for a higher than top half finish.

I have had a couple PM's asking about what does top half mean exactly. So, I went through all of legs results for the last 4 years (all chip timed ones) and here is the minutes per kilometer pace I came up with.

Leg 1 - 5:04
Leg 2 - 5:08
Leg 3 - 5:29
Leg 4 - 4:57
Leg 5 - 5:15
Leg 6 - 4:59
Leg 7 - 5:20
Leg 8 - 5:28
Leg 9 - 5:06
Leg 10 - 5:15
Leg 11 - 4:44
Leg 12 - 5:02
Leg 13 - 5:27
Leg 14 - 5:05
Leg 15 - 5:22
Leg 16 - 5:06
Leg 17 - 4:47

I hope that makes what I was thinking about more clearer to everyone.

Q - I think that's a great way to look at what the goals are for each leg.

For reference sake - when I ran leg 4, I was at about a 2 hour half marathon "shape" - I was able to hold 6 min/km for everything BUT smokey - my overall pace ended up being about 6:10/km, I think - which is much slower than 4:57/km.

So - for leg 4, my guess is that you'll need someone that can run a half marathon under 1:40ish.

There are 17 legs to the relay. But we have had runners run more than one leg in the past, so don't think we will not have a team if we don't get 17 runners.

We do a lot of e-mailing in January (once we know we are "in") and in May (to make sure everyone is on the same wave length and problem solve). You will be expected to read/reply to any e-mail's with CTTR - IMPORTANT in the subject line. And even some of those I'll put in "No need to reply". But on the other hand, feel free to ask questions any time. I'll do my best to asnwer quickly and clearly.

There will also be e-mails in October, but they are just about the team deposit we have to make around X-mas time.

Thanks IG.

Legs 4 and 17 are the 2 legs that some teams put their finest runners on. 4 is famous, as all the teams watch the runners scale up Smokey. Also 17 is known as the "glory leg". Leg 10 is at night, and there isn't really a spot to stop and cheer, so it's a little less high profile. There are a couple of spots on 9 to cheer. But 9 is a night leg as well, so I think there is a little less appeal to runners looking for a "flashy" leg. But certainly, 4, 9, and 10 monsters. Of course that's my opinion. I'm sure other people may have different ideas way some legs are faster than others.

Yeah, considering the is Smokey right in the middle, it certainly will be a challenge!

Nice research there, Q! Like IG mentions, these are not easy runs. I recommend using your hardest, hilliest run as the basis for what your time will be like. So, I wouldn't use my flat half-marathon route as a comparison for running the 20km Leg 4, because there's a bloody mountain in that 20km! :-D

4:57 is a pretty quick time to aim for!

I guess what I was getting at was that someone like Ironboy, who averaged 4:38/km for his half marathon would most likely be able to do a 4:57 overall pace for leg 4.

Those are some pretty fast times, not impossible by any means but I think a lot of training will be needed to get those times for those who average those times on flat/semi flat ground.

If you run a 5:00 avg pace.....shoot for 4:30 during training.

...and no scotch under any circumstances till AFTER the run.

Well, luckily, I just squeak in. My time for Stage 11 was a 4:40 pace, just under the 4:44 standard.
