Marathon Instructor

Postby shaggytour2005 » Wed Dec 17, 2008 9:55 am

OK, I know some of you have your pros and cons with some of the running stores out there so I understand I may get some comments about this posting. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I respect that but I am excited about this opportunity.

A Running Room store just opened in my neighbourhood and is the first store very close to me which offers clinics. It has been a long time desire of mine to teach a running class so I could not turn down the chance to instruct one of their classes. I was selected to run the marathon group on Thursday evenings starting Jan 8. I will also be out for the Sunday morning (8:30am) fun runs with this group, and others in the area that want to get a group run in.

I am very excited to pass along my experiences and training tips that have allowed me to transform from super couch potato into a competitive age group duathlete during the past 3 years.

I hope some of you have the chance to join myself and the other instructors for some fun and helpful training!

Have fun Larry!

Just a quick note regarding this:

I will also be out for the Sunday morning (8:30am) fun runs with this group,

My understanding was that it was a requirement for the clinic instructor - along with the Wednesday night run. The way you wrote it makes it seem like you have decided to join them out of your own free will.......

Teaching running clinics has been some of the most rewarding running that I've done! :)

good for you! and good luck!

Lots of us have taught clinic (or are teaching) - so there are many here to ask questions to. And just laying it out there - it's natural and normal on occasions to get frustrated and tired of doing it - I speak for myself - I definitely have a love-hate thing with clinics - just tell your participants - no, you can't make them run faster, you can't make it feel easier, and you aren't their personal life/run/nutrition coach.....

IronGirl - Point taken about my wording. I was told that Wednesday and Sunday are part of the package.

I've definitely found that having passion & enthusiasm will be a big benefit to your "mentors" Larry...

Kudos for taking this on.. I'm scared to teach anything beyond LTR myself, so taking on the Marathon - Big round of applause! :D

Cool Larry. So Sunday mornings are open group runs that anyone can drop in on?

Congrats! Whatever people might say about the RR, they have certainly made running a way of life for a lot of people, and encouraging people to run is never a bad thing. I started running through the RR, and I think it's fantastic that you're taking on the marathon class! You not only get to enjoy your own running accomplishments, but you get to be an important part of someone else's too.

Enjoy!

Hope you enjoy your experience! I have just completed the LTR clinic as a group leader, and LOVED every minute of it..... I will certainly be looking at doing more of this after I complete my own clinic in the spring....

Enjoy, and good for you in wanting to share your experiences with others... it's what makes us all stronger and smarter runners.....

Cheers.

Congrats on giving back to the running community, I hope you enjoy it. I used to live in that neck of the woods but I'm back in Milton now. I'll try to make it out for a Sunday long run.

Larry, it's great that you are making an effort to pass along what you've learned to other runners. I was thinking of taking the half marathon clinic at that store, as it's near where I work and running in a group would get me outside during the week rather than on the treadmill. (I'm not a fan of running alone in the dark).

What do you think of the running routes in that area?

Congrats Larry - I think it is great! That is the new location close to me (sort of!) I am in Milton and we don't have a store yet. I was thinking of joining some of the Sunday runs seeing as I have never run with a clinic...I'll just have to see if I can get there for 8:30 am :?

Catch up time. I don't have as much time as I wish I had to write on the web but I do like to thank those who take the time to read my postings and always feel they deserve thanks. I was away for a few days so here is my posting to catch up with those I have missed.

Carrie - I know this will be special so I appreciate your happy faces!

Dr. S - Thank you! I am super excited so counting down the days.

Mini-T - Don't be afraid. You can do it! Thank you!

Banane - Thanks for inspiration. It is nice to hear positive feedback from those who have led already.

DougD - Best of luck on your charity ride! Thanks for reading!

Doonst - I hope to see you out on one of the Sunday runs!

Hammie - I hope I make a similar impression on my runners that an instructor seemed to make on you. Keep up the excellent running!

Jwolf - Thanks for passing along info to Doonst. I think you have him thinking about the Fun RUns now!

orleansrunner1962 - Thank you for the great feedback from your experiences! It will be so cool to see these folks run their marathon at the end of the class!

Smitty - I am sure you miss the area as I have found it to be very nice to live in so you had better come back for a few Sunday visits.

Ed Fizz - I felt the same and now I have the opportunity so I had to take it. I hope you get a chance in the future to pass along al your great experiences!

Andes - I love running in this area. I used to live in the Etobicoke area and worked right downtown TO so ran there as well. Actually, I used to run home often so right through TO into Etobicoke and hated all the stops and traffic. I now have many routes where I don't even stop once and when the trail are clear of snow, they provide a very safe and enjoyable route for training. Once you learn them you can go for 20k plus with very few disruptions. Let me know if you would like so trail pointers as you can pick it up in many places around Meadowvale.

tgilpin - Yeah, my Sunday mornings are usually pretty lazy but I am going to pull my butt out of bed for sure. With work, family and training I do not sleep as much as I would like so Sundays I try to get that extra little bit but I guess I will try to find a nap in the afternoon to allow me to run. Hope to see you out so please say Hello!

When I group lead Irongirls half marathon group it was the first time I had a vested interest in the race results of a bunch of strangers.

It was very rewarding to see them meet their goals. We are still friends with many of the "flock" including maniacs Tori and maclean (aka Rob).
