Boston - Game over

Postby Ed Fizz » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:20 pm

My knee, although it's feeling better, won't let me do the required milage for me to do Boston this year. Phoque  I've decided not to go.

Hoping to requalify in 2010 for the 115th running of the race the following year.

This is bad news...I'm looking at going in 2010 and I'm sure you will be there. Why not take the winter off. It sucks out there right now. There is plenty of time to recover and hit your 09 goals.

That's sad Fizzman. I know a little about how that feels, although I chose to run injured. No hope for next year?

that sucks. :(

Would they allow a deferral to 09? (or do they do that?)

I think they do! Only you mean 2010.

If you qualified after September 29, 2007, you do not need to request a deferment of your qualifying time. You may simply re-use this same qualifying time to register for the 2009 Boston Marathon. Registration will begin in September, 2008 via our web site.

If your qualifying race was between September 23, 2006 and September 29, 2007, and you have become injured after you registered for the 2008 Boston Marathon, you may defer your time to 2009, provided that you:

* notify us in writing no later than April 21, 2008 by
returning your number pick-up card with an explanation to:

Tough news, but obviously a wise decision that not all of us would have the courage to make. Digging through the BAA website, I found last year's injury deferral process:

the BAA website wrote:Race Week: Injured Runners
I have registered for the 2008 Boston Marathon, but I am unable to compete due to injury. May I defer my entry to 2009?

The Boston Athletic Association allows officially registered qualified runners to defer participation to the following year, provided they have completed the following procedure:

1.) If you qualified after September 29, 2007, you may re-use your qualifying time to register for the 2009 Boston Marathon. You do not need to request a deferment. Registration will begin in September, 2008.

If you qualified between September 23, 2006 and September 29, 2007, please return your "Official Number Pick-Up Card" along with a note stating you wish to defer your qualifying time to the 2009 marathon. Send the card to the following address:

Boston Athletic Association
"The Starting Line"/One Ash Street
Hopkinton, MA 01748-1897

By the looks of things, you would still have to pay the registration fee again, therefore this comes down to whether or not you think you'll get a BQ this year (since the deferral decision precedes your next race). Don't forget that you're due for another five minutes in the BQ time.

Sorry to hear about your cancelled Boston race :( . It must be very frustrating and disappointing for you as it takes a lot of effort and training to qualify in the first place.

For what its worth I think you probably made the right decision not to go if you can't get the proper training in. I hope your injury clears up soon!

I'm sorry that you were faced with having to make this decision but it seems like it is the wisest one. I hope you are able to defer it. Heal up!!

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.

That's a damn shame Alain, I'm sorry to read this. As others have said perhaps a deferral is the way to go and you can rock the course in 2010!

It's an expensive race to run and not have fun training and running.
