A NEW RM forum topic suggestion---RACING! UPDATE on PAGE 9

Postby TheBman » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:23 pm

Moderators…..I would like to submit a request for a NEW Forum topic and am posting it here to see if there is interest among members to add this to the list.

In order to keep Running Mania attracting its current membership AND adding new members, I think that it is about time that RM add a “RACING” topic where those who LOVE to race, those who love speed, those who love to “get their game on” have a place where they need not “tippy toe” around words like “sub”, “fastest”, “hammer” or heaven forbid “ELITE” or “BEAT”, not to mention the big one…..WIN.

Before you say it… YES, I am one of the least competitive people on RM, but have been around RM since its inception to witness many battles that consumed RM for days and turn people away who have yet to come back. For some reason, we can tout “recreational” or “mid-back of the pack” yet the second anyone talks about “pro” or “top 3” it seems to bring out the defensive side of some recreational runners, that have (and I have been told personally) turned away truly gifted “top 20” Canadian athletes that have a TON to share with both groups of runners.

But, since (it seems) that recipes, TV series spoilers and “all things non-running” (read: NET) have taken over the most popular “views”, then why can there not be room for a topic that could have threads like “I run a 20:35 5k….would love to hit sub 20..any ideas?” or “ Sub 11hr IM….advice needed”… or even a race report that is titled “I kicked a$$ and took names….YEAH!!!!”.

RM is diverse enough that I think those who are looking to chat with like-minded athletes should be able to. A new TOPIC is needed to do this, not in GRD, as people who are easily offended feel the need to state that at many opportunities. This way, if there is a separate TOPIC, those who would/could/are offended by competition or perhaps a bit of rivalry or even some trash talking, DO NOT NEED TO EVEN VENTURE INTO THIS AREA... much like many of us have been told about the NET. “If you don’t like it, don’t come to the NET!!!”.

So, I would love to solicit opinion of the RM’ers to see if they think this is a good idea or not. IT IS NOT a place to start a debate or spew “just cuz I’m slower than you doesn’t make me less of a runner” stuff that has hijacked other threads.

What do ya think… Is there room for one more TOPIC that is designed to help runners out by sharing what is now a WEALTH of information without the “Not to hurt anyone’s feelings, but…” caveat?

Just throwin' it out there.....what do ya think??

Thanks for your time…moderators????

I'm fairly new, but I don't see any problems to it.

I'm not a "racer", I'm offended.

Seriously...as someone who posts primarily, these days, in the NET, due to my irregular running habits...I think those that are interested in seeking "sub" or "elite" or "win" should have their own "safe" place to discuss all that is pertinent to them as well.

In summary: I agree.

I totally agree. I am a back of the pack girl (and proud of it) who loves to read the trash talking amongst the top of the pile runners. Bring it on!!!!!! 8)

I think we should also add a pets forum. Sometimes, I feel there are more post related to pets than to running.

“just cuz I’m faster than you make me more of a runner” :P

Bring it on!

It scares me a little when I agree with IT

A racing forum is cool with me. Perhaps I'll leven earn a thing or two there (I know I've learned lots of interesting things from popping into the NET)

I also like the idea, especially on the outside chance that I can pick the brain of a "top 20 athlete".

[rant] As a relative newcomer to the site, I have only seen a couple of flare-ups between the competitive-anticompetitive camps, and from my limited perspective, it seems like the reason the latter are "defensive" is because the former are coming out swinging. Maybe it's a chicken and egg thing. A new topic area will help but that shouldn't absolve anyone from attempting to understand a different point of view. [/rant]

Great idea Bman.

From a non-competitive person looking to "learn" to "bring it" to their training/racing, it would be interesting/helpful.

It's not a forum for me, but why not? We allow a completely french speaking thread :x so anything goes. Your suggestion is running related, so it makes sense.

I am not a "racer" (until the right person gets ahead of me) but I would think that this would be an appropriate item to add for those who love to race.

So I say YES

How about a seniors forum? A place where us aging racers can reminisce about recipes, music and pets, and complain about most everything including all you silly youngsters. 8)

I'm new to running mania and I like the tone. Keep it light. I don't mind the daily life content. Racing isn't what attracts people to running mania. But if people want it, Why not. One thing I have noticed. There is too much tri bunk on the forums for a running site  .

Most people object to an Elitist view so we could call it "Sub-Elitism"
