over 30... or so the UCI deems it to be.
In Quebec, I got out of the ultra competitive Master A (30-39) last year to be thrown into the super competitive Master B (40-49).... no noticeable improvement in where I finish

For the Masters Cross Country series I was in last fall, Masters started at 30.
That included Provincial and National class races.

http://ontariomasters.ca/ This includes all track and field not just running.

Most road races classify a Master as 40 and above.

WOW...really. Are you sure that's so for everywhere. Why I ask is because my friend Paula who is a very good Masters Runner (i.e. wins.. ) has been doing some racing in the US this past season and I'm sure the races she ran in it was 40 plus.

What is UCI?
In Manitoba the Road Race Committee (Run Manitoba) has decided that it will be 35 to be consistant with Athletics Canada (which is the govering body of Track and Field, Cross Country, and Road Racing.

I've participated in other Masters' fora and this question always comes up. The best answer is ...if you feel like you belong then you do.

USATF's Masters programs offer a variety of competitive and fitness opportunities in track & field, long distance running, and race walking. Competitions take place in 5-year age divisions for individuals and 10-year age divisions for teams. Age divisions begin at age 30 for track & field and race walking, and at age 40 for long distance running.

As strider posted, it is 40+ for most road racing, but I do believe from there, they recognize individual 5 year AG - a girl I train with just crushed the Marathon Record for Masters 55+ last year with a 3:11.

The Canadian Masters Athletic Association recognized 35+ as masters and 30-34 as sub-masters.

Ray, up until a couple of years ago Masters was known as Vetrans Athletics in Oz.
To be a Vet or Master you have to be 40, however you can start in Pre-Vet competition starting at 30.
I should add everyone runs together in 5 year age divisions results are worked out afterwards.
It's interesting to note that the two biggest athletic movements (the ones with all the money) are Little Athletics U/7 - U 15 and Masters Athletics M and W30 - MW/90. Meanwhile Club competition (serious competion revolves around club competition, not University or High school comps.)

Sadly, the very age 13 - 30. when athletes should be developed they have had a gut full, mainly thanks to over ambitious coaches and drop out never to be seen again.
Not the quarry but the chase,
not the trophy but the race.

IMO...I still think that 35 is too young to be a masters - especially in running... :?
22 halfs (PR 1:42:02) :)
5 full (PR 3:48:21)
...and a smattering of adventure and trail races thrown in for good measure!

All running is on hold until further notice .... :0(

What is a 'Master"?

It depends on who you ask. I think 35 is a bit young too. I didn't take up running till I was 31 and I did my hardest and best, i.e. fastest, running in my 30's and 40's. Maybe the mid-thirties was considered "old" back in the day when most competitive running was done in school by people in their teens and early 20's. Anyone who was still running in their 30's just had to be considered a "master" or some other kind of nut.

In England, they seem to use the term "veteran" instead of "master". As long as race organizers have AG's, the name doesn't really matter.

It maybe that this is a situation that is more like that with cars:

"It's not the age. It's the mileage!"
