Looking for that picture, I saw a conversation re: marathon distance and tatoos.

So do you think of it as 26.2 miles or 42.2 km?

I vote 42.2 just for my own purpose. While I technically "did it" in the USA, (well, there is that 10K or so in Canada) I will honour that with a star. But I am a Canadian Kick A$$ chick at heart :D

I couldn't even tell you how far a 'mile' is. Canadian km here! 8) Anyways, it sounds farther. :D

Miles for me. Of course I am of the generation where metric was an unknown system. It took me years to get used to it.

I didn't vote-- I use both, or one or the other, depending on the situation. I train in kilometres but some races are marked in miles. I don't care either way. When people ask me how long a marathon is, I answer either "42 kilometres" or "26 miles" depending on what country I'm in and sometimes the age of the questioner. I leave out the 0.2 part because that sounds a bit pretentious. :)

when I think of a marathon - I think 26.2 - but, when i'm actually training or running one - it's 42.2 (if that makes any sense).

I voted 26.2
i run for me.

26.2, but only b/c if I refer to anything here in km, people (everyone except DH) look at me with crazy-person glassy eyes. Running Paris last year was great--km markers make everything go way faster!!!

I use miles because they are big and tough. Km's are small and wimpy. :)

just kidding. I use miles because I started on a treadmill and they are in miles... and my first program (higdon) was in miles. and they're big and tough. :P

There should be a way to set the program up in miles. Might have to bug the man a bit...

I occasionally use miles in training, just to get a round milestone. I will run 3, 10, 13, or 20 milers and think of them as that. But on race day, its all about the kms. I don't read the race markers, so it doesn't matter to me if they are statute or metric.

I'm like Jwolf, I say miles or kilometres according to audience. But I always say the ".2", just to subtly imply the fact that marathons are a specific, standard distance and not any long run.

I think that's why I do it too.
I'm always surprised at how many people ask.."so how long was that marathon you ran"...lots of people seem to think of any running race as a marathon.
Even before I was a runner I knew what a marathon distance was...and vowed never to do something so crazy

Never....such a big word :D

I am very screwed up. I always think of the distance in kms. I don't think of a half as 13 miles. When we train by pace outside we train as running 6:30 min kms or 7 min kms. But when I train on the treadmill (which is rarely these days), I run in MPH. So 6 miles per hour or whatever. I can't figure out how many KPH I run on the TM for some strange reason.

My first marathon (NCM) it was in kms and I knew exactly where I was. My second (Disney) I was so confused about how far I had gone and how much I had left. And it seemed SO FAR from one mile marker to the next, because I kept thinking in kms.

I won't get a tattoo but if I did, it would be in kms because that is how I think (and it sounds further even if it isn't  )

I have found the people at work that don't exercise think anything over 5K is a marathon.

Yeah, which is why the 0.2 sounds so funny.

I once answered, "42.2 kilometres" and the person seemed to roll their eyes at the precision of the answer. :) I never did that again.

Actually, its 42.195, as every race in Japan points out (the Tokyo marathon site is tokyo42195.org)

Those 5 metres make a huge difference!
2009 Highlights
Marathon - 2:54:05 (Mar 22 - Tokyo)
Half - 1:20:00 (Apr 26 - Hartwell)
5k - 17:09 (Acura 5k - Jul 19)
800m - 2:16.80 (York U - Jul 28 )

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Definitely 26.2

If you say to anyone of my age "26.2 miles" they know that means a marathon, 42.2 kilometers doesn't mean anything.

This is my bumper sticker:

42.2 just wouldn't have the same meaning
