North Vcr Runner Missing - Mick Maguire

Postby lisaannr » Sun Oct 18, 2009 9:11 pm

Yikes! He hasn't returned from his early morning run. From the Club Fat Ass website;

I just got a call from Wendy Montgomery. Mick Maguire (some of you might know him) hasn't returned from an early morning run. Police is asking for capable runners to help in the search. ]

Anybody able to help and cover trails in a specific area (Lynn Loop, NorVan Falls, Cap College etc) is asked to check in with authorities at Mick's house at 1641 Dempsey Road in North Vancouver. Before setting out, please pack trail essentials, especially space blanket and flash light.

I got the email from North Shore Athletics as well and forwarded to many friends and coworkers capable of helping out. Hoping for a safe, speedy rescue.

NSR has made voice contact with someone. They have not yet confirmed that it's Mick.

voice contact means he's alive. Glad they found him (and relatively quickly in the dark!).

ETA: This is great news. It's really scary, how fast stuff can happen out there. On Sept 14th, I was running on the HSCT, and we met a hiker on the way in and out, stopped and chatted with him twice. Days later, a search had been started, and it ended sadly as his body was found the following Saturday. I'm so glad this didn't end this way. But, it is still a reminder of how careful and prepared we need to be. I'll be watching to find out what happened.

"Mick is in excellent shape, may have only rolled his ankle"

Hope so!

ETA: And "They just got to Mick and it will be 30min to get him out"

A happy ending:
"Mick is hiking out with rescuers to top of Mt. Hwy and is tired and cold, but in good spirits. He will be home soon..."

This is such great news to wake up to and also remind us that fall trail running can be dangerous....rain & wet leaves make it a very different run some days. Thanks to all the volunteers!

Cool thing ... my coworker and his friends went out to look. They're not part of the club, only sometimes trail runners, and don't live on the North Shore. But they went.

LOL. Nope. That's OK. We'll just say I like lots of things about this new job of mine.

Not sharing about one of the 'perks' of the job??????
Ok.
Cool that your coworker got out to help look, that's awesome.

here's an email forwarded from NSA that Jordan sent last night:
It’s been a really stressful day for everyone involved in the search for Mick Maguire. Thankfully, the search was successful and earlier this evening voice contact was made with Mick from the opposite side of the river from where he was eventually met by rescuers. Matt White was the first person to make voice contact with Mick and inform the search teams of his location.

The effort of everyone who came out today was really quite remarkable. We estimate that close to 100 people were out on the trails searching for Mick and North Shore Rescue did an OUTSTANDING job mobilizing the search for Mick. I just want to say a sincere thanks to each of you for responding to the call for help.

As you can imagine Mick was tired (and a little hungry) after finally making it home tonight, but he is extremely grateful for what everyone did today. It feels so good to know that people are there for you when you really need them!

Thank you again for helping to bring our friend home.

Jordan
