first half marathon suggestions

Postby runnergirl » Mon May 10, 2010 7:04 pm

I am new to Running Mania and fairly new to running (have done 2 10k races so far). I am considering training for a half marathon and am wondering if anyone could suggest a good half marathon and how long I should give myself to train? My pb for 10k is still a bit slow at 59 min. I was thinking of giving myself until August or September? I open to any advice or suggestions!

I forgot to mention I'd prefer to do a race close to home, so somewhere in Lowermainland, British Columbia.

Welcome

I'm not from BC so probably not the best to suggest a half marathon race. I've got lots of suggestions for Alberta - Canmore Half marathon is lovely - early Sept.

Victoria in October is really nice (10/10/10) this year.

There's also a women's half in October on Jericho beach. All the others I know of are on trails-- also very nice but very different.

If you are doing 10K now, you're ready to train for a half. You could look into some of the programs at the Running Room or other stores in the area. Their training programs will start mid-June.

welcome!

another vote for Victoria on the Thanksgiving weekend. North Shore Half is the same weekend, as is Okanagan in Kelowna.

for a training plan, the Royal Victoria Go the Distance one is very good - gentle ramp up on miles, long program which i found helpful in case of injury or illness. some folks might find it too long to focus though. There are 2 other programs to choose from as well - a shorter one, and one for more experienced halfers.

Another vote for Victoria - beautiful course, and the views of the ocean in the second half are enough to distract you from your tired legs! It's not too hilly, but varied enough to be interesting.

And, there will be lots of maniacs around...

Do you have a link for the women's half at Jericho? I can't find any info.
