New to Winnipeg
We are new to Winnipeg. Anyone know where the best running routes are?

What area do you live in? How far are you willing to travel to get to a route?
Welcome to Winnipeg, from someone who just left.

Re: New to Winnipeg
We live in the Waverley and Wilkes area (south central area of town). We would like something around here, but will travel to get to a nice route.

I'm not really up on what's around that area, but the first things that come to mind are Assiniboine Forest for path and trail runs, though I don't know how long they are. There's also an easy multi-use trail that goes from the Forest all the way to Beaudry Park that would be a good long run (of course I can't think of the name right now). I've ridden it on my bike before and the only area you sort of have to watch for is crossing the Perimeter Hwy. From Assiniboine Forest you can cross North over into the Park which is used a lot by runners, then on to Wellington Cres. which is closed on Sundays for "foot" and bike users.
If you're looking for long long, ultra type runs, I think you can string together a number of different routes starting at your area. There's a multi-use path on Wilkes too isn't there? Or Sterling Lyon Parkway. If I remember correctly you should be able to run it all, or most of the way to Assiniboine Forest.
If you're looking for hills, there aren't any.

Re: New to Winnipeg
abhainn pretty much hit it on the head. You live in a great spot for running routes, depending upon how far you want to run.
The multi-use path along Sterling Lyon should be complete all the way to Kenaston. After you cross Kenaston, it's hit & miss as there's construction due to the Ikea going in. About half a mile you can either turn left to go over the "hill" and head towards Fort Whyte Alive (a beautiful wilderness park), or you can keep going straight and end up in Assiniboine Forest.
Another idea is to go north on Waverley and cross over the tracks, passing by Taylor and Grant. Then you're in River Heights, which is a beautifully treed residential area of the city. If you keep making your way north towards the Assiniboine river, you'll end up on Wellington Crescent which is a very popular road for runners and cyclists.
If you head south on Waverley's new multi-use path, I think it ends at McGillivray where you either have to east or west. If you go west, you'll end up at McGillivray and Kenaston, where if you head south on Kenaston (I think that's the only direction that the path/sidewalk continues, and I believe is still under construction but is at least smooth gravel at the moment) you can get into Whyte Ridge. If you do some fancy negotiating of streets in Whyte Ridge, you can end up at the community centre, which has a path that will take you towards the south entrance to Fort Whyte Alive.
If you instead headed east on McGillivray, you'll cross Pembina Highway and end up in Fort Garry, another old and well-treed part of town. For some reason, it's less popular to run in than River Heights.
I have no clue about any of the distances of any of the ideas I just put out. But I'd ballpark most of them to be 10 miles-ish out & back.

You can go from the Assiniboine Forest to the Harte Trail and run a little further. And if you're into it, you can cross the Perimeter at the end of the Harte Trail and run some more. I know someone who's done it...

I've never managed to get the Routes section to allow me to add any routes.

You're right. It appears to be broken. I'll look into it.
