In a small park for 42.2km will make people crazy. Plus everyone on there is saying all runs are just about getting noticed. Not really.. theres guys competing out there for there salary.
Re: Rob Ford: get marathons off streets
Ford wouldn't know what a marathon was even if it hit him in the arse.

Very, very happy I picked Ottawa (TOH) over Toronto (Sunnybrook H) 12 years ago . . .

Re: Rob Ford: get marathons off streets
Leaving the STWM I was astounded at the traffic jam on the Gardiner. Perhaps the city didn’t do a good enough job of telling folks what to expect on Marathon Sunday. There is an amazing public transit system as an alternative. I couldn’t help how many of those folks in the 10K+ traffic jam that could have jumped on a GO Train or a Subway. A few years ago I was going to the Ex with the kids. There was predicted traffic issues so I left the car at the Islington Subway station and then jumped on a Street Car! Perhaps our Politicians could force better planning! Having a Jays Game and STWN overlap is just asking for trouble. Sure hope you guys don’t get stuck with Ford!
Re: Rob Ford: get marathons off streets
If Rob Ford thought the running & cycling communities were large enough to get him elected he'd be pushing for a marathon every weekend and closing the city's main streets to all but cycling traffic the rest of the time. (Yes, I know, the name Rob Ford and the word "thought" should never be used in the same sentence. My apologies to all those Rob Fords not running for mayor of Toronto. Actually, he's the one who should be apologizing to them.)
Re: Rob Ford: get marathons off streets
My niece was married downtown TO the weekend of one of the cycling events that uses the DVP. We still had no issues. The hotel had notices posted and directions to get from A to B without using the DVP or hitting difficult to negotiate parts of the city. Yeah it may be less then perfect for a Sunday morning but it was no big deal. In fact it was really neat to drive down the road and look up at the DVP with bikes zipping by!
I hope all Toronto runners show up and vote in the election ... along with the many organizations and people who benefit from the two large runs in Toronto.

Re: Rob Ford: get marathons off streets
Two developments this week...
1) Polls have swung a fair bit, Ford is now polling at only 28% (to Smitherman's 23%). He was previously in the 40's.
2) Sarah Thomson pulled out, and urged supporters to vote Smitherman. She previously was polling around 7%, so not a huge impact but in this close of a race it could be the difference!
Still a few weeks to go, so thankfully it's not over... still time to swing away from Ford! Just needs to keep yackin'.

Fat lazy worthless candidate that thinks putting his foot in his mouth tastes good..........
Remember everyone, politics is a one day popularity contest. The next day everyone will not like him. Choose wisely or else you will get this type in office.
There should be minimal requirements for candidates that are running for office. Not just name recognization or who has more money to advertise.

See, nothing to worry about. His reign has been completely without incident.
I am fortunate to have Running Free as a sponsor. I like to keep silly stats and maps of my Daily Neighbourhood Tours, Races and Marathons run in a Silly Yellow Shirt.

On the bright side, the marathons are still on the roads (not in parks) and we have more races than ever (even with new road closures!). So he hasn't done much damage to running.
Cycling is a different story...
