Ottawa AVXC - The Do-It-Yourself Free Race Series

Postby dgrant » Sat Jul 30, 2011 2:38 pm

Pursuant to the conversations about races being too expensive... every problem has a solution.

What: A series of 5K weeknight cross country races.

Where: Grasshopper Hill in Alta Vista. (Closest major intersection is Alta Vista/Heron) A park course on short grass and dirt. Mainly flat, two minor hills. Easy street parking, one portapotty. OC Transpo stop right at the park.

When: Wednesday nights at 6:30pm. August 10th, August 24, September 7, September 21, October 5.

Who and How: This is the unique part... The course will be the same for all 5 dates. I will provide the course markers, a folding table and jugs of water for each date. For each date, a different crew (4-6 people) will "host" the event. This means providing:
- the manpower for the timekeeping, marshaling, and post-race refreshments.
- post-race food.
- race name, theme, and prizing.

Rules For Hosting
- Put your crew together, call dibs on your date. First come first served.
- Maximum crew budget is $100. This has to cover all of your food and prizing costs, so you'll need to be creative. Apart from the race course, everything is the host crew's prerogative.
- No cash or merchandise prizes.
- If you want to do some kind of fundraising on the side, that's fair game. But the races themselves must be free.

This isn't an RM thing, so spread the word and invite anybody. I'll make a Facebook page so it'll be easy to draw people in and RSVP for planning.

Get crackin'. Make a crew (or announce your availability to be on a crew), pick a date, start brainstorming. You want cheap races, here's your chance. :D

I did this in Toronto 3 or 4 times and it's pretty easy to get 25-30 people out for some free racing.

You already know I'm in! I'll have to make a crew so I can call dibs on a date soon huh? Good idea Dave!

I arbitrarily picked Thursday. I wonder if Mon/Tues/Wed is better?

Hi,

I would be willing to be on a crew for either of the August dates but I have no friends  (Seriously no running friends to form a crew) so if anyone wants an extra person to help on one of those dates, I'd be in.

I'll still try to make it out to one of the races (even if it's on Thurs...shhhh don't tell my coach!)

What about Wednesday nights? A mid-week fun night?

Thursdays my friend A has floor hockey (I forgot, I'm a bad friend! ), but Wednesdays she'd be in I'm sure... I'm voluntold'ing her ;)

But even still, we'd just be 2 girls... Jes, does Wednesday work for you?

I've already committed to a boot camp class mon and wed nights in Aug (am I ever going to be home??) but I could make the early Sept race (I go back to work end of sept and I'm not sure if I'll have time for evening things then).

So yeah. Don't make plans around me  If it works out, I'll be happy to come out or cheer but I just can't commit to much right now.

What a great idea Dave -- since I'm not running, I'd be more than happy to help man the station(s) - I'll follow this thread and see what night(s) I can make :D
2014:
Mar - Around the Bay 30 km - Done
May - Sulphur Spring 100 miler - DNS
Sept - Army HM
Sept/Oct - 50 miler
Oct - Pace Bunny - Toronto Scotia Waterfront
Dec - Reggae Marathon in Jamaica

I will take the October 5th race. I have travel in Sept that may make those dates tougher to work around.
Chilly 1/2 - March 4
Montreal 1/2 - April 29
NCM 1/2 - May 27
Manitoba 1/2 - June 17
Army 1/2 - Sept

Hi Everyone,

If we are doing it on Wednesday, the second date in August is probably out for me, so my preference would be the first date.

I might actually be able to make it out for the run on September 7. I will be in Montreal that week and it's not that far away. I won't be able to crew any of the other races, though (so hope you don't mind a one-time freeloader :) ).

+1 Hudson is just that teeny, tiny bit too far away to do a flyby race committee evening or to race - wishing I could do either one, or both.

I don't think I can pull this off for next week - not enough time! Do we want to pick a new, later date so we have more lead up?

Dave - will you provide guidance on how to do things like timing etc?

I agree Scrummy. So no to the 10th, the 17th (since Christine can't and we are 4 with her ;) ), but I can do the 24th - can you & Christine man the run with me & A then?
Dave.... we'd love your guidance :D

Yep, no problem. I'll bring my laptop... there's a program used for easy timing like this.

I'll take care of the first race (a week from today). Everyone just bring your piss and vinegar (and lawnchairs!)

Also FYI, there's a kids playground right where the start/finish line will be.
