Toronto runner caught kicking CDN flags on Remembrance Day

Postby rambo999 » Tue Nov 13, 2012 11:26 pm

Anyone know who this Toronto runner is?

During his run, he was caught kicking miniature Canadian flags displayed on the lawn of Sunnybrook Hospital on Remembrance Day. He was confronted, photographed, and gave the finger to those that watched him do his deed.

TORONTO - Gerry Samson couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

With thousands of miniature Canadian flags displayed around Sunnybrook Hospital on Remembrance Day, he and his wife witnessed a man kicking them over.

“We noticed a woman talk to him and he just kept going,” Samson, 57, said Tuesday. “We were shocked at this. We were trying to appeal to his good judgment and say what he was doing was so horrendous.”

The man ended up flipping Samson and his wife the bird.

The couple were at the nearby Mount Hope Cemetery looking at the veterans’ graves prior to heading to Sunnybrook to see the flag display.

As they approached K-wing, where the hospital’s Veterans Centre is located, Samson noticed a man in jogging clothing walking through the flags and “gleefully kicking them down” around 2:15 p.m.

“We were in our car and when we caught up to him and asked him to stop, he actually said to us, ‘Stop me if you can,’ so I started snapping pictures of him,” Samson said.

The mystery jogger, accompanied by another man who didn’t participate in the act, took off, but not before unleashing his middle digit to the camera.

Later, after visiting the hospital, Samson spotted the jogger again on Bayview Ave. and witnessed him veering off the sidewalk to kick more flags down.

“I got to the intersection before he did and got my camera out and was going to start filming him, but he turned away and went into the woods,” Samson said.

Such “hateful” gestures hit close to home, he said, especially when his 30-year-old son returned home from a tour in Afghanistan five years ago.

Samson’s niece uploaded the offensive middle-finger image onto the website Reddit under the heading, “Do you recognize this coward? Toronto man seen damaging Remembrance Day tribute.”

Samson said he didn’t file a police report because he doesn’t believe there are any charges that could be laid.

But by getting his face out to media, there’s a good chance the man might be identified through “public shaming,” he said.

“We saw an elderly gentleman — maybe a vet — with young children, replanting the flags the guy had knocked down.

“That was heartwarming.”

What an ass. I predict he will be outed, though. He looks like a "runner's runner", or a tri geek or something ;) and the running/tri communities, even in TO, are not that large. Someone will recognize him.

I'd deport him if I had my way.

The first picture, side profile kind of looked like me

Glad to see there are other pics clearly showing his face. If he is caught, I wonder if he will offer up any explanation.

That's very disrespectful. It's one thing to not wanting to participate but another to vandalise....

And the comments on the Sun's on-line article are (as expected) barely coherent and about as base as you can get.

If they find him, just to show how forgiving runners can be, I'll give him free entry into the Creemore Vertical Challenge.

Then a special group of runners can "help" him in the swamp...

I guess that's the danger of public shaming... gotta make sure you get the right person! Vigilantes tend to have a low burden of proof before they act.

Nope and honestly I don't care. He was being an @ss with the whole flipping the bird to people questioning what he was doing.

I hope that he is caught and shamed.

People fought and died for his right to be an idiot but we don't have to like it.

ETA - I have sat and comforted friends with survivor guilt (i.e. they lived and their friend next to them died), so I have little sympathy for these kinds of acts.

Amazing...this guy should have came down to the Unknown Soldier monument during the Remembrance Day ceremonies and seen the veterans, the young soldiers standing their with their families, and the sad, but appreciative crowds who respect the difficult job they did/do and the sacrifices they made so people like this momo can run with his designer sun glasses in a safe park in a great country.

Lets give one of the 80yr old vets 10min to teach him respect. I'm sure they're still tougher and more man than this guy can ever aspire to be.

Then the friend that was running with him, and not doing it, might have wanted to tell his buddy that what he was doing was wrong....

Nope no excuse....for that or flipping the bird to two elderly people!

Anything is possible. I've never been in the "let's lynch him" camp. I've been in the "let's out him" camp. Give him a chance to tell his side of the story. THEN we can lynch him for being a d-bag.
