this weekend

Postby ultraslacker » Fri Mar 28, 2014 6:06 pm

hey peeps, I could use your help with something. :)

as you know our server has been really sketchy lately. I submitted a ticket and they claim everything's fine. They asked me to track some info when it's down... but we can only get it WHEN it's down, so it's a matter of hitting it at the right time.

So over the next couple of days, when you notice that the site is down, can you make a note:
date and time
ping
tracert

For ping result go to>>
>> Start >> Run >> type "cmd" >> type "ping www.runningmania.com".

For the tracert result go to>>
>> >> Start >> Run >> type "cmd" >> type "tracert www.runningmania.com"

Just copy and paste the info it gives back into an email and send it to me, if you can.

That way I can show them how often it's happening and hopefully they can trace the problem.

I'm super busy this weekend so I'm not even sure I'll be able to catch it myself... can you guys help me out? :)

thanks!!

And for those of us who are going to try to help to do this, we should copy Holly's directions somewhere so that we can access it when the site is down. :)

I am less likely to notice on the weekend since I won't be on my computer a lot (and tomorrow I'll be in the US most of the day), but I will try.

edit: we could post those directions somewhere on the facebook page?

also, in Windows 8, when you're in desktop mode you press the Windows key and R at the same time to get the run command line.

Given that the error messages ("Resource Limit Reached" or something similar) have occurred near the end of each of the last few months, I just assumed that it was a bandwidth quota issue and that I should get back to productive work until the start of the next month.

(For Mac users, "Ping" and "Traceroute" can be performed via the "Network Utility" in the "Utilities" subfolder of the "Applications" folder.)

I can do the date and time part of your request, but the ping and tracer part is Greek to me. Can someone tell me what those terms mean, and where I would find/use/ access them?

Of course I haven't noticed that the site has been down at all today.

If the errors are "Resource Limit Reached" and such pings and traceroutes will still work fine, the host will show that their hardware is up and working properly, so why they saw no problems. Likely something in the software or database server side.

Right now, it happens that I click on the site and it doesn't respond but when I get the command file up the site is back and running... it seems to only last a few seconds.

I've seen it a bunch of times since then but like Dr S said it only lasts a few seconds and then it's back.

if you guys in general aren't worried about these brief interruptions then maybe I'll just let it go, though it's very frustrating that it's happening multiple times a day and they're still saying there's no issue (because in the moments when they happen to look at the site it's fine, of course!).

Last week, it would be down for hours at a time. We could wait until we have a day like that again.

Yes, though mostly just for several minutes (i.e., I'd refresh the page several times and keep getting the same "resource limit reached" message), so I'd eventually give up trying. I haven't noticed it at all this week.

This. Last week was bad, but I've had no issues this week.

On Friday morning it was down for several hours. I mean, I wasn't trying continuously, but it seemed to be down for an extended period of time.

so, they're maintaining that there's nothing wrong with the server and that it must be our site.

So my plan for this weekend coming up will be to do a full upgrade of the forum software and try to clean up the databases a bit.

Hopefully it will go without a hitch but there may be some downtime... warning you in advance. :)
