big changes (please read)
hey everyone,
When RM first started, I asked for volunteers to help out as moderators. A number of people volunteered, many of whom are still moderators today. Along the way we also added a couple more. This group has done an awesome job, and have had a huge part in building and shaping RM. They have also been a huge help to me in making decisions related to RM and supporting the community through some tough times.
However, as the community grows, the dynamics shift--from the original core group where we all knew each other to now over 600 people, many of whom have never met. This changes a lot of things--and I have come to the decision that the old model of "mods for life" is not the best way to go. As a result, we have decided to start rotating in new moderators, for fixed terms.
There are several reasons for this:
- having a small, closed, unchanging group raises issues of cliqueyness (whether perceived or real)
- not everyone (particularly new people) may be aware of who the group is and how they work
- huge parts of the country have been under-represented (5 out of 9 of our current mods are from Ontario... and we have none west of Winnipeg!).
- opening it up a bit will allow more people to get involved
- better regional representation will (hopefully) help more people feel like they have someone they know in the mods group--so that if they have a question or concern, they have someone with whom they feel comfortable addressing it.
- some of the perceived "mystique" and "secrecy" around the mods group will disappear
So, here's the plan:
Three of the current mods (running angel, La, and dwayne runs far) will continue on for the next 6 months to help with the transition. Three new mods (mike runs, bruyere, and blue cup) will start this week.
From now on each person's term as a mod will be one year. If they are not prepared to commit for a full year they can commit for 6 months and then decide. We will have 6 mods altogether, and try to spread them out regionally.
Mods are selected by myself, with the good advice of the other moderators, Jen, and whoever else we ask for input. We have discussed other selection options but this appears to still be the best way.
The expectations of the mods' duties remains the same (see the "let's talk about moderators" thread for details on what they actually do). They have done a great job of that so I see no need to make changes in that area.
We currently have a private "mods" board that only they, Dave*, Jen and I can see. We also currently have another private board designed for gear organization. I will be combining these into one board so that the people in charge of the gear, the mods, Dave, Jen and I will have a private place to discuss pertinent topics. If in the future it becomes appropriate for others to access that private board, we'll do that (for example, if we had someone organizing a large contest or something and they needed somewhere to discuss and plan).
* some may be wondering why Dave is in this group--it is because he is the Queen's Trusted Advisor. ;)
This week will be one of transition... so please be patient and supportive, both for the new mods and the ones that are leaving the role. And let's have a huge Thank You to RA, La, Dwayne, HCiD, qmp, theBman, Kiza, Jacc, and Dani for all of their time and energy invested into making RM the fabulous place that it is! :)
Any questions or comments... this is the thread for them! :)

Thank you, again, Holly, for giving us the opportunity on being part of RM Nation, and the support given to us by the rest of the Maniacs, over the past two years ... Look forward to see the Forum to continue to prosper and grow ....
I guess we also have to return the keys to the Executive Suite and Golden Key to the Port-a-Potty, eh !!!

that depends on your behaviour...
I sure haven't had any chocolate in my mailbox for a LONG time.

True, but my decapitation threats are down by 80%. My behavior is predictable, assume the worst.
next up:
This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day
So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Holly the place runs seamlessly and to me and that is a good thing.
You do what makes it work
Oh and to the graduating mods, you may have done a good job but don't go thinking that you can run off to some other board with a resume full of positive comments, we will lie if they call.

You know things are working flawlessly when something like this catches you by surprise. I hadn't really noticed that the mods hadn't been changed since the forum was started. All of the moderators have done a fantastic job and I'm sure those incoming sacrificial lambs --- oops, I mean dedicated souls -- will carry the orange torch with the same passion as those they are replacing.
