Avatar and Picture Posting Instructions

Posting Avatars:
Step 1: Decide upon a avatar you like the best. People on the site have been known to make them or you can hunt up your own.

Step 2: Save it to your hard drive.

Step 3: Open an public account for uploading graphics and pictures such as Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com). You can use avatars you have saved to your harddrive and put them directly on RunningMania, but if it is larger than 80x80 pixels it won't work. Photobucket is nice and easy and also automatically gives you the html coding you need for your avatar/pictures to be seen on the site by all of us.

Step 4: Upload your avatar(saved on your harddrive) to your Photobucket account.

Step 5: Copy the coding from the last box (under your chosen pic) in Photobucket. You will know it as it had IMG in front of it.

Step 6: Go to RunningMania and upon logging in, go to your User Control Panel. You will find the icon for it at the TOP of the forums page.

Step 7: Once in that page click on the the avatar section. You can paste the code into the "Link from offsite avatar" box. [If you want to put pics or images in your signature, you can do that in the Signature section. Just paste the code from Photobucket or another web based photo hosting site into the Signature area.]

Step 8: Put in 120X400 as the size, insert your link to the off-site image and hit Submit. You will get a stretchy picture in your avatar that is 120X400, whatever the proportions are in your off-site image. So, now put 120 in the width, leave the height blank and hit Submit again.

Posting Pictures in the body of a post:

1. Create an account with one of the free picture-hosting website (photobucket.com is a good one)

2. Upload pictures from your computer to the picture-hosting site. It's pretty easy.

3. The site will assign each picture a URL. Copy and paste the URL into the body of your RunningMania post, "Select" the whole URL and click on the "Img" tag right above the post box. This will insert the appropriate tags before and after the URL in your message and ensure it shows up as a picture and not just a web link.

4. Photobucket allows you to resize images, since sometimes when you post them they end up MUCH bigger than you intended. Remember, the image has to be copied in each time someone clicks on the link. A good size is less than 500K.

You should be all set to go now. If you're not sure if people can see it, just ask. Most of us have had to do that at one point or another.
If you continue to have problems, you can always ask someone. Everyone can either point you in the right direction or help you along. Hope this helps you in at least some capacity.

How do many Maniacs get a nice large Avatar? I guess they link to some offsite location?

Well, i tried using photo bucket but I can't seem to do it. I uploaded a jpg photo to photobucket, copy the link into my avatar offsite link, but I always get an error saying photobucket link is not available.
But I can use the same links for posting photos in posts/replies.

Thanks!

Ian,

Scotty downloaded a program called AvatarSizer and we used that to make our avatars 100x100

as for linking avatars from photbucket, you have to use the URL code from photobucket to copy (it is the top code of the three they give you) and paste it in the "link to off site url" box (I think) or it could be the "upload avatar from another url" box...

I can't remember which one I pasted mine into.

Hope that helps.

Since you have so much room on RM now, why not add in a photo module for phpBB?

What did I give you? 100gb bandwidth and some 20gb of diskspace? ;)

I'm trying to post a picture. I've followed the direction here (thanks CAW) and everything looks good and works except the picture is huge. I've tried resizing it in photobucket but it always turns out the same size when I post it here despite the fact that I've reduced the size in photobucket. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

So it does work! I follow the instructions and no success (get an error of Photo bucket Link not valid or something).
Weird thing is that I'm a Computer Systems Admin and still can't do it.

I found a round-about way. If I get it into photobucket and then right click and "save as" to my desktop, then reimport the new photo back into photobucket, then post it here...it works!

Can someone post instructions on how to make URL links pretty? Like where you can see something like this: Click Here , and it'll go where you want?

Instead of using the normal URL tags [url]website address[/url]

use [url=website address]nice words[/url]

it worked....pic is posted.

Holly there was one thing i did different in the instructions. When I got to step 5 the URL was required which I copied from the first box (under the choosen pic) in Photobucket and then in step 7 I paste it.

Great instructions both for picture editing and posting the avatar.

I've managed to get as far as copying the image code from photobucket and pasting it in my profile in the "link to" section, but I keep getting an error message that my "offsite URL link is invalid" or mean words to that effect. :( Has anyone else run into this problem.

I tried to change my avatar last night and followed the above instructions to a 't' but I keep getting the following:

The URL of the remote avatar is not valid.

I then gave up and tried to but it back to the original avatar, which worked before, but now I keep getting:

The URL of the remote avatar is not valid.

What am I doing wrong? I am following the same instructions and I got it before, but it is not working now! :D

There must be something wrong with the URL addresss you are using. Check your URL reference by putting in in the address box in your browswer. You should get just the picture that way. If you don't, you must be missing a character or a slash or using the wrong tag.

I tried copying directly from the last box under the photo in Photobucket and it doesn't work. Last night I even wrote it out and pasted that, no workie. I'm going to try just what you said and hopefully, the happy face avatar shows up again. If it is still not there, I don't know what else to do.

Post the url here in a mesage, and we'll check to see if there is an obvious error.

It's funny how it works in the body of a message fine.
