Training for my first marathon.

Postby shoesandbikes » Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:22 am

Hello Everyone,
I am 10 months new to running and have decided that next fall I would like to run my first marathon. My current training schedule is:
Monday: run 10 miles
Tuesday: chest and shoulders ( weights)/ cycle 10-20 miles
Wednesday: run hills 6-8 miles.
Thursday: back and abs (weights) / cycles 10- 20 miles.
Friday: run 10 miles.
Saturday : cycle 10-20 miles.
Sunday: biceps/ triceps

I have read "Running" by John Stanton. I was wondering if I should continue with my current workout schedule and then just jump into one of his plans 18 weeks before the race or should I alter my current schedule to better prepare for the marathon training program? If I should change my current training program what changes would you suggest?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to RM!

That's a pretty good looking program!

I think that maybe you could just start replacing one of your cycling workouts with an easy run, and start gradually making one of your runs longer. That should give you a good base to being the training cycle.

As you get into the program you will have more speedwork, tempos and hills

If you have not entered any races, I think the spring would be a great time to get a half marathon in. It will help with your race preparation and planning skills too!

Thank you, I am always looking for a reason to run more. Adding an easy day sounds fun.
