Rock and Ice Cancelled.

Hey Gang,

I'm afraid I have some disappointing news for you all. The crew and I will be scaling back the 2010 Rock and Ice Ultra to just the 1-day Cold Foot Classic; we have no choice but to cancel the K-Rock and Diamond Ultra next year.

The whole 'global economic crisis' has, in fact, been quite devastating to the mining and mineral exploration industry. Despite working in mineral exploration for nearly 20 years I have not been able to secure enough work this year to fund the Rock and Ice Ultra. We have the most amazingly supportive sponsors with BHP Billiton, MATRIX, Arctic Response and others but the operational costs for this event are many times more than that of a 'hot' desert race.

The crew and I have also just landed one of the very, very few exploration contracts in Canada and it will keep us working all through the winter. We have to take this work, there is nothing else out there and it will get us back on our feet so we can plan for Rock and Ice 2011.

This is very disappointing to me, the crew and our sponsors but we are committed to race again in 2011.

Please continue to visit the Rock and Ice website for updates....

Booo!!! I'm sure we can come up with something interesting for you to do. Why don't you see what Ray Zahab's up to this year and do something crazy with him?

Oh nooooo! You and Kim were so looking forward to this. I hope you can find something else that is just as exciting and challenging. Don't they have a race in the Antarctic since you have some nice cold weather gear to use?

Huge pit in my Stomach - I have been prepping for this for 7 months. Really speechless. There are other races, and believe it or not, way more extreme that this one was.

Plan for now is to keep training as if it were still on and see what falls into place. There is still the one-day Cold Foot which might be an option.

I'm sorry to read this.
And from the sounds of it the race organizers are disappointed too...nice that they did give everyone lots of advance notice.

That sucks! Hopefully they bring it back in 2011. A lot of races in some remote places have had a hard year.
Good luck with the training and hope you find a great race on which to focus your enthusiasm.

That sucks, man. Sorry to hear about that.

My suggestion... Desert Winds Expedition Adventure Race...

Thanks you guys! You're all so incredibly supportive. It's a huge disappointment - both emotionally and financially. We had already booked our flights and invested a LOT in gear and cold weather stuff. Oh well, we're picking ourselves up and looking at other options. Things do happen for a reason and I'm sure that it will become evident. Hopefully, it will be back in 2011. We feel very badly for the race organizers as well as it must have been such a difficult decision for them.
Thanks all,
Mrs. Strider :)

Very disappointing for all involved. It is such an amazing race. I feel very fortunate to have been able to do it, but also looked forward to seeing others share the experience.

I feel bad for David (& Kim) and JD who had already invested so much physically, mentally and financially to this adventure. There are plenty of other options and I know that they are both considering what to get excited about next. Whatever it is, I know it will be fun and inspiring to follow along.

I also really feel for R&I RD Scott Smith. He's a great guy who put his heart and soul into this race. It is very well recognized and respected on the world scene and it must have been really difficult for him to pull the plug this year. I'm glad to see that the Cold Foot one day race will still be held as this should help to maintain race exposure for possibly future years and the return of the K-Rock and Diamond races.

I get a little twinge in my stomach thinking about not being at R&I this year, but am also looking at other races. I really hope that R&I returns in 2011 in a big way.

So sorry to be reading this David (and Kim). As has been said, one good thing is they've given lots of notice. I have faith that you will find something new to focus your energies on and that will come up challenging you to your fullest! Best wishes.

How about Arrowhead 135 as a replacement race? http://www.arrowheadultra.com -- It is at the waiting list already, but you never know. I have a friend that has done it and is geared up for 2010.

How nasty is the Arrowhead? I've glanced briefly at it before, and honestly it scares me.

Can't believe that Arrowhead is sold out already. Sounds very interesting indeed. Stiff qualifying requirements, but probably wise.
