Mega Mo wrote:What a great event. I loved this trail. It had more hills than I expected, but I'm fine on hills and had fun. This was my first attempt at anything over 50 miles, I signed up for 24hrs not knowing what to expect. I had a blast meeting so many people. Queenga, Viking and BJH were awesome at the 5k station. Man that grilled cheese hit the spot! Late in the night, the noodles became my favourite. I met West Grey at the 5k station, can't even remember when that was, it was still light out I think. I brought a lot of my own food, but ended up bringing most of it home.
I remember feeling a little tired after 4hrs and thinking I've still got 20hrs to go! What a weird feeling. Early in the race, it's easy to distract yourself chatting with so many different people. By about 5pm the trails were becoming sparse of people, I whipped out the Ipod for company. After 8pm, I had a pacer join me for the night. She's done her share of 100 milers so her tips and help were fantastic, not to mention the company! She knew the course after 1 loop, which was good because she stopped me from countless wrong turns in the dark! She also kept on top of my hydration and fuel, which was great. I really didn't have to do much, except run! I was curious to see how I'd feel by the middle of the night, but I was feeling ok, much better than I expected. Eventually feet were throbbing, but blisters weren't bad. I stopped at 23hrs 18min. I considered trying to squeeze in another 2.5k, but my pace had slowed so much at this point I called it a day. Finished at 130km, 1st in my age group which totally caught me off guard (a lot of people way faster than me stopped at 120k). This was 50k farther and almost 14hrs longer than I've gone before, so I was happy.
Now for the biggest surprise of my night: A few weeks ago, just for the hell of it I threw my name in the lottery for HURT 100 in Hawaii (I really should stay away from the computer). They did the draw Sat evening, after the race I checked my phone and had an email from HURT and....yup, I somehow got in! Little problem, I've never actually done a 100 miler, not to mention one of the toughest ones! Then again, a year ago I'd never done a trail race, let alone 24hrs. I talked to Charlotte after the race, she's done it 4 times and she knew I got in while I was still running but didn't say anything! She offered all sorts of tips and gave me some quick horror stories already. I need to talk to some people and make a decision very soon. 5 months away? I guess I should probably do Haliburton then....
Nice to meet so many great people, I'll see a lot of you at ITT!
Take care,
Mo

I see Haliburton on the horizon... or some other 100 miler in Sept, Oct or Nov.
Lucky you!
Congrats on hammering out 130k on that course! It was great to meet you, MegaMo. See you at ITT and pretty much all the fall races. You gotta get the training in...

We're so weak and give in so easily to crazy grand races. :D

lol it was more the "why take 6 months to prep for something when I could run it 4 weeks from now instead?!"
