Sulphur Springs Trail Run

Postby M_Crazyrunner » Tue Feb 14, 2012 11:04 am

Where are all the "crazy" trail runners? I'm going to sign up for the 50km ( my first) and was hoping there would be some info here. How is the race? What are my fuel options for a race this long? Training in Alberta where it's always winter?:) Maybe just moral support!!!! Anyone doing this race & what should I know before I sign up??? Thanks.

next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Just registered for the 100miler, it will be my first.

Fueling for 50km is pretty easy at Sulphur, use whatever you do in training and top up with the offerings at the aid stations. Trail is terribly technical, but there are some elevation changes (hills).

I think Strider meant to say the trails are NOT terrible technical? Aside from some bogs and roots, the trails are generally broadpath and well groomed.

As you are striving for a 50K PB, you are not allowed to dally at the aid stations... But do spend a few seconds at Dieter's station (start of the lollipop loop) and gaze in wonder at all the treats! The 50K tends to be a comofrtable run, with the heat of the day hitting after the 50K's finish. You will be in good company for your first ultra. There were 199 people running the 50K, 50M and 100M events last year!

If you can, plan to stay around for a while after you finish and cheer on the 50M and 100M runners. You might also witness some very fast times if the trails are dry. SS has been known to attract the very fleet, like Doonst, MegaMo and Curly (I have to add my wife on Valentine's day...).

Oh! And good luck to you! For an hour after you finish, you will continuously repeat that "this is the stupidest thing I have ever done". Give it a couple of days, and you will "eyeing" the Haliburton 50M...
It's a hill. Get over it!

I think Chainsaw Baby meant to say, the 50K tends to be a comFORtable run ;)

Yes I meant NOT, I blame it on the stress of the 100mile registration.

Sulphur is a good place to do a first 50k. Lots of support, well organized event, good vibe all around. The aid stations are well staffed and stocked and the trail marking is great.

The course is a good mix of well groomed trails, a short gravel section at the start finish, a bit of pavement and the rest is dirt trails with very few rooty spots. You run mostly under tree cover and there is variety in the elevation and surface you run on, so you never get bored for too long. ;)

In terms of fueling, make sure you're hydrating well, because sometimes it tends to be hot on race morning and many people end up getting dehydrated. Eat what you train with and you should be ok. Good luck!

AFR is back from the dead.

If all goes according to plan, SS this year will be my debut for the 50 mile distance. I have some unsettled business with this course, as I ran it sick a couple of years ago and it beat me up pretty bad.

Welcome M_Crazyrunner
Sulphur is a great venue for your first 50Ker. Were you planning on being in S Ont at race time or are you coming here for the race?

Strider
Welcome aboard … I have a suspicion that you will go under 24 for your 100 mile debut!

AirForceRunner…stay healthy , I really want to see you at the starting line for your first 50 miler!

I am going to be doing the 100 miler again this year. I haven’t registered yet but I have made the arrangements to be off work. You know you’re an Ultra Runner when your idea of a vacation is running for up to 30 hours.

I'll be sure to not beat you on the first 20 km loop (a la Dirty Girls). I thought you were going to beat me up!

Hey guys. Been lurkin here for a while cuz the "other" running forum only wants to sell running bibs:) Anyway, thought it was time to come out of the shadows. Thanks for your help with the race. I will be coming "home" for this race. Why just visit the family when you can race too!!!! I'm looking forward to this one because I rode my mountain bike all thru this area when I was a wee young lad. 50km might be a tad ambitious for me but running trails is awesome. Are there any good training programs so I can be ready in 3 months? I've run halfs & I was "home" last year for the ATB. I also do some AR every summer so I have a decent base. Thanks again & see you @ SS.

Trying it again to see if I can't get under 19 hrs. Always a fun race and so close to home I think I've named all the roots.

The Hamilton Harriers will be putting in a team to this well organized event. If you want a shorter challenge than the big distances think about putting together your own team. See you there.
