Taping toes

Postby Spirit Unleashed » Sun May 20, 2012 4:44 pm

I have purchased the injinji (add to dictionary) as UQ suggested. And finally cracked the book "Fixing Your Feet" which has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.

Problem is this, the book shows interesting pictures of taping the big toe, but not the little one. anyone here able to describe their way of taping the little toe or have a link?

That's a good source, thanks for posting a link to it.
"Fixing Your Feet" is also a good source.

Now, as far as pinky toe taping is concerned, I have tried many different techniques with very little success. I have used both Leukotape and then tried Kinesio tape as well, of course, I used benzion tincture under the tapes to help it stick better.

The problem with Leukotape is that it is not as stretchy as kinesio and when feet swell after about a day of running, it is really uncomfortable. But it is strong enough that it prevents blisters forming on the outside of the pinky and the top.

Kinesio is not as strong and if your feet get soaked completely, it can come off and cause other problems. But if it stays on, it allows for the swelling that is inevitable after 20+ hours of running.

The best technique I have managed to come up with, after lots and lots of practice, is cutting an arch-shaped piece. The smaller arch wraps around the base of the pinky. I start gluing the tape at the top and wrap it around the toe from outside towards the inside. Not sure I'm describing it well.
Bottom line, practice, practice, practice.

If you use Kinesio tape, keep the paper backing as a 'template' and mark it right/left pinky. It helps you know what shape to cut the next time, so it speeds up the taping job considerably.

All the other foot parts are much easier to tape. The ball of foot is tricky, but again, practice makes perfect. Good luck.

If I have time, I will take pictures of my pinky taping jobs next time I do it. I won't be taping for Sulphur 100. The course is dry and I'm running in Injinjis.

There is new kinesio-tape that is much more waterproof than the old stuff- maybe that will work better?

No I don't really understand what you are trying to say.

I have KT. I need to order the tincture of benzoate.

I have started practicing with the taping. I have several months before my next really long race.

Do you know the brand? Any links would be greatly appreciated. I'd be willing to try it if I can find it. I usually shop at www.medimart.comactually, the physical store in Mississauga, but the online catalog is where I check to see what they carry.

it's the new actual KT tape brand- I saw it at the expo in Vancouver and they will gradually be replacing what they used to sell with this version.

I can't find any online links, sorry. I usually buy mine (not for blisters but for injury taping) at the Sportmed stores in Vancouver but they don't have the new stuff yet.

Using KT, I cut a 3.5in long strip of tape... approximately.
I cut out a semi-circle shaped piece from the lower part of the tape, around the middle point. This piece is about 1 inch long and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch high. This is the part that wraps around the base of the toe.
I round the two top corners and the whole piece looks like a "bridge" or "arch"... kind of.

Thanks, J! I'll have to check out the KT brand tape. I am using 2 other brands. I'm not at home and I can't remember the brand, but I can look it up when I get home.

OK the waterproof stuff is actually "KT Tape Pro". I'm not sure if that means they aren't selling the old stuff. On the website ad they claim "7 days and still going" including showering etc. I never get more than a day out of the old stuff:

http://www.kttape.com/

Eta: sorry I can't seem to post the link to the exact page on my phone but I think you can get the idea.

Thanks! That's helpful. I will check to see if Medimart carries it. Sometimes they don't list everything in their online catalog and might have other things in the store.

Good chance they'll be at the Ottawa expo next week too- maybe someone can be on the lookout for it. :)
