Coming back from a different kind of injury...

Postby DonnaRigs » Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:56 pm

Apparently, sisters like to do everything together and as I said, we are having some pretty serious marriage struggles. I am, at this point, pretty sure we won't come through this together.

I don't feel like running. I don't feel like p90X. I barely feel like rolling out of bed. It doesn't help that we are getting hammered by snow.

How can I get moving again? Seriously. I just ate five cupcakes. Gaining all the weight back is not going to help me feel better. I know some of you have made it through stuff like this and worse.

Move anyway you can. Go for a walk, dance with your daughter, play fetch with the dog.

Inertia is a powerful thing. An object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion stays in motion. Get moving and you will keep moving.

Defy the snow and cold - do not let it win.

Do something different - even if it isnt exercise. Just something, to get off the couch/bed/floor.

+1

I understand how physical activity can seem daunting when you're sapped of energy....I might also suggest some restorative yoga, good for the mind and body.

Or, try some meditation. These free ones are very nice: http://www.meditationoasis.com/podcast/ ... o-podcast/

It can be tough when you aren't motivated to do something...we all go through those phases. Do you have a workout buddy that could hold you accountable?

Or you can use the RM Nation...(or FB)...Just post that you are going to do something, and ask people to check back later to find out how it went. I've done that when I really didn't feel like going out for a run...I got so many encouraging remarks that I pushed my butt out the door and it was one of my best runs of the month...

Can you try the 10 min rule?

I know how hard it can be to motivate yourself to go for a run/walk for 30 mins or a specific distance. When I am bummed and don't want to get off the couch, I force myself to invoke the 10 min rule.

Try "run/walk/bike/swim/yoga/__" for 10 mins. If you don't start feeling better after 10 mins then stop.

However, 9 times out of 10 you will probably go longer.

This has always worked for me.

I managed to get back to it today - I admit that posting this actually helped. Putting it out "there" made me more accountable somehow.

1st day done :)

Donna
Remember that this time of year, with the change of season and all, does have a psychological impact on a lot of people (let alone everything else you are presently going through :| )
One thing that does help sometimes: to get some "daylight" - if you are running early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it is pretty dark much of the time. Go outside at noon , just for a walk . It seems silly, but we need outside light...

Well done getting out there --

The power of posting on RM is REALLY strong -- times where I wanted to give up in a race as an example, I would give myself a "talking" = "you can't quit know or you can't slow down -- you don't want to have to post that you couldn't do it when everyone on RM has been so supportive"....

I also like the "10-minute rule" -- once you have gone through the trouble of setting aside the time and getting yourself ready, you will get out and do your walk/run or exercise of choice, and you will feel SO much better....

Keep posting -- we'll be watching for you :D

Donna, no truer words have been written. You just have to trust in "us" to keep going. I'm glad you were able to find the inner strength to get out there and just do it!

Been back out there?

I know there were times prior to my separation where I struggled to get out the door. The two previously mentioned tricks worked really really well for me - friends and 10 min rule. Having said that, once the separation happened, I used running as a coping strategy. I ran more mile that year then ever before..... I still love running for the quieting of my mind, see if it works for you.

Couldn't make a lot happen last week, work combined with migraine and sick Darby, but I am not beating myself up about it. Gym stuff is ready to go for strength training in the early
Morning and running on the TM at work. :)
