Separated Shoulder?

Postby phorunner » Wed Jul 18, 2012 10:27 pm

Looks like I hit a snag on the road with my bike and ended up slamming shoulder first into a retaining wall.

There wasn't a pop, but initially I needed to lift it with my other hand and everything clicked back into place. The pain isn't terrible, and there's no swelling. I was able to ride home.

So I googled around and it sounds like a mild seperated shoulder. Though, the odd thing is that it sounds (or rather, reads) like I should have some mobility issues, and that moving it should hurt more than staying still. Thing is, the more I keep it still, the more it locks up and hurts. It feels fine if I keep moving it. Does this sound normal?

Icing it now. Wondering if I should put it in a sling. If it gets worse, I'll get it checked out tommorrow. In the meantime though, any tips? Information?

Separated Shoulder?

Sounds like you dislocated it!
Unfortunately that means you might be more prone to it happening again.

I would get it checked out either way because you might end up building up some scar tissue that will affect its mobility.

That's what I originally thought but symptoms didn't seem to match up as well.

I'll see how it feels tomorrow.

Nah, not trying to be a dude.

For starters, it wasn't THAT bad, didn't want to go sit in emerg for like 6 hours.

Second, I don't have a great perception of pain. I went flying off a motorbike (rented, no gear), got up and felt fine despite the road rash. Doc couldn't believe I fidn't get more hurt. My boxing injury - didn't hurt too much, I was more concerned with vision loss. Again, Doc shook his head in disbelief. That and a whole host of other times. They always look at me like a nutbar.

In any case, i'm at a clinic waiting for it to open - just want to get some x-rays and make sure it's not too serious.

Sucks too because I just started building my harness - now I can't use it. :@

All the more reason to get it checked out, glad you're doing so.

When I was 17 I landed upside down on my head and shoulder while skateboarding. Went and saw the GP that same afternoon and she thought it was fine, said I should get an x-ray the next day just in case. Slept on it and went in the morning - turned out my collarbone had broken clean through but hadn't displaced at all! Maybe someone with less pain tolerance would have been more insistent about getting the x-ray then and there.

got it checked out - he did some stress/mobility tests - he said nothing was broken, at it will heal on it's own.

He told me to buy a sling to take the pressure off the joint, pop some Advil, and to keep moving it occasionally. The bulk of the pain is supposed to be gone in a week, the rest over 2-3 weeks. He said no running - I lol'd. (I know, I'm an idiot and a jerk. It's addictive, what can I say)

Yeah, definitely glad it's not that bad. Still sucks though.

Except that now I have a pouch. I'm going to use it to hide my mini-airhorn for the party friday.

(You see, my friend's sister and I have this playful thing going on where we incessantly tease eachother. Last time I brought a megaphone it drove her nuts and she hid it. I'll skip the details, but I was prepared with a second line of attack, and got it back. This time, I'm bringing the megaphone again, and I'm going to be seemingly careless and LET her hide it. When she comes back to the fire pit, I'll be ready with this mini blowhorn I got - WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! - it's LOUD, but tiny. It's going to be epic - she'll have no idea that it's coming...)

So, my shoulder's been rapidly improving the past two days - I got A LOT of sleep and that's helped.

Funny, you don't really realize how difficult it is without full use of your second arm until it's out of commission like this.
