Are there some basic swim techniques (front crawl) that can help me swim a bit faster? I am able to swim (got all my colours and my bronze stuff when I was 12) but I don't swim competitively at all. I've been swimming 1km at a time for the past 3 weeks and my time down to a whopping 23:50. I want to get down to about 20 minutes by the end of the summer, and work on getting down to 15 eventually. I would love to try a tri maybe next summer (when I save up enough to buy a bike!)
Any advice would help...
:)L

How do you breath when you swim?? Breathing technique can make a really big difference. Are you swimming in a pool or in open water? If you're working on your pool time, what kind of turns are you using??
Without watching you swim, it's a really hard call to make since a lot of little things could be slowing you down but there's no way I could pick them out without seeing you swim.
At a pool, grab a pair of pull buoys and work exclusively on your pull. If they have hand paddles that'll really help your strength.

One mistake that a huge number of people make is that they stop kicking while they're breathing. Concentrate on your kick and make sure that you are keeping a steady, continuous pace, even when you're breathing.

Hey, what's the deal? This some kind of rogue message board?? Presumably it's not linked to any particular store so we can post stuff and not have it be deleted?

Lisa, I answered your swim question on that "other" board.

Some of us wanted to start a board that is not business-driven so that we don't have to worry about whose business plan we're wrecking when we post. My goal is also to have it run more democratically so that it can serve the needs of the users. :)

Swim coaching can be very expensive (and somewhat hit or miss). If you're into videos, check out www.totalimmersion.net. There are also some good articles on there.

Check this site out, too: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sportacademy/hi/s ... efault.stm

Hooray for multisporters!

I'm getting Trek1000 for Christmas from the parents since i'm a poor student. I cant wait to get out! Im a pretty good swimmer,so im looking forward to a tri- or du- summer. I really want to get a few marathons and short races in before i seriously consider strengthening other areas.

any thoughts for a prospective triathlete?? :D

PS Jacob will be here Tomorrow!! :D

Hello Melissa,
You can do it the smart way, like most people do. Or, you can make life really exciting by doing things my way, just jump in & go for the gusto! Wing it!

Have fun! It's a great gang over here!
Since you have your sight set on a Trek 1000, great bike, I will not attempt to persuade you to get a cyclocross bike & ...
