Ontario tax break for bicycles under $1000

Postby SuperboB » Fri Nov 30, 2007 9:09 pm

Ontario just announced a tax break for bicycles under $1000 and other safety items like helmets. Of course it doesn't affect me but for those who are looking at mid-level bikes might benefit. Perhaps you could find a bike builder to sell a base aluminum bike for $999 and then everything above that would be billed separately as upgrades. Food for thought...

Very nice! I wish Nova Scotia would do that, we could use some more incentives to get people out riding.

You're close enough to pop-over for some cross-border shopping! ;-)

The tax break also applies to helmets and other 'safety related' gear.

Those Zipp wheels are safety related aren't they ???

I think this is a good thing, but at the same time kind of ticks me off. How come if I want to spend over 1000, I don't get a break.

Wouldn't it be fair to everyone, if the first $1000 was tax free, no matter what the price was?

I guess the thinking is that people aren't likely to spend $1,000 on a commuter bike, which is likely the reason for the tax break.

Do they still have "no sales tax" on shoes under $30?

Exactly. The folks spending over $1000 aren't the ones that need the tax incentive. Most people don't spend over $1000 on their first bike.

Yup. Although, similar to the $4 meal exemption, it used to actually mean something. ;)
