I now realize I enjoy training more than racing but the crazy long days kill me. I don't even enjoy racing at Ironman level. So, I'll train less and feel better about it. I'll race when I want to and without any expectations or pressures.
Dude... that's exactly where I'm at. I have IM Regensburg in 12 days, and I'm going to be a participant, not competitor. I'm going to enjoy every minute of it... then retire from Ironman forever.

Eric, I always admired your perspective on things. For example when you told me that worrying about cut off times would not indeed make me any faster the next day.
I wish you and Helene all the best at your events this year. Don't forget the DQ before! and enjoy the race for what it is

Re: Reconsidering everything
Do what makes you happy from thte recreational side of things. If training is what you like then just do it and screw the racing. From a career prospective, look at the long term picture. A lot of pain now will pay mega-dividends once you get the MPA and CMA, assuming you haven't got them yet.

Re: Reconsidering everything
Ha ha ho ho! I have some time on my hands and thought I would check out RM or something ...
And here I see a post from my sweet Madame Bourette. I know and understand what you are talking about!
But since we are registered for those races, lets make the most of it. And that is to have fun! Anyway that's what I have in mind. Enjoying travelling to new places, doing this together ... !
I know you'll do great, you are on fire remember?!
As for me, I am not nearly feeling heat ... so I am not sure what will come out of the races but I intend to have fun at them. ( I have been missing too much training due to family circumstances )

Re: Reconsidering everything
One thing about my racing out look this year: I don't race for time. But each race I have gone to has provided an evironment which was a mental challenge, physical challenge and unforgettable experience. I also know I love working out everyday and I love what strength training is doing for my body. So I'm not willing to risk injury because I stressed myself on speed. I'm looking at long term fitness and endurance as the thing I want. I want people to be talking about me when I am 75 or 80 or more. (did you see that little old lady's biceps?)
Going to a race is so much less pressure when you are not worried about how fast you will be. I am currently signed up for 3 races, each with environments where I can learn about myself, but none very fast.
But I admit that since I already broke 4 in a marathon and got a BQ, the need to obtain that qualification is gone. And I know that going to Boston would probably only make me cranky.

Since I have an outside interest in the Copenhagen race I was following the coverage. Eric did very well with a 10:05:08 total time after a 1:02:51swim, 5:20:41 Bike and 3:35:26 run. I wish I could run like that...
Also from Canada Pro Luke Dragstra in 10th overall (8:34:44) and Marie-Eve Crepault in 12:46:57.
I apologize if I missed any results.

Re: Reconsidering everything
Fast swim in a salty lagoon. In went easy in order to save me for the rest of the day.
Hard bike. Lot of punctures. I was lucky and did not get any. A lot of rolling hills and no rest. Always pedaling. I was tired at the end of the bike. Very scenic.
Nice run. I went by feeling as for swim and bike. I started at a 4:28/km pace and went slower and slower. I had to stop once to the toilets. This costed me not doing a sub 10. Nutrition is always an issue.
I am glad of my results.
