Anyone doing Gravenhurt - Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Postby a_beacher » Sun Jun 22, 2008 12:02 pm

Hi Maniacs,

I am thinking about doing this event as my first Sprint distance.
http://www.multisportcanada.com/ms/events/showevent.cfm?showEventID=56

I am drawn to it because the swim is started from steamships and then you swim ashore. How cool is that? (I'm amused easily - ha ha)

Anyone ever done this one before? If so, do you have any advice or information that I might find helpful?

I did the Olympic last year.

It is a good race and some parts of the bike course were spectacular. Stuff you should know:

- You jump off the boat and then swim to the start line. There was some issues with drifting last year and many of the swimmers weren't at the start yet when the horn sounded to start the race. I think the swim to the start was about 200 extra metres. Be prepared.
- The harbour is deep. You see absolutely no bottom until you are climbing the steps to the dock. This means no weeds either :) but you need to be comfortable with never seeing the bottom.
- some of the bike turn-arounds were pretty tight. Practice.
- The roads weren't in the best of shape, particularly the run course.
- None of these things would make me not do it again.

8)
The road to hell is paved. Run trails.

Gravenhurst for 2009 for this cat! The whole "steam boat start" will be a big step for me.

Welland - not bad, swim is in the canal. Long run from water to transition though! Bike was flat, flat.. run is on a bike path along the canal, over the bridge & along the other side of the canal..

Owen Sound? On my "potential" list! 8)

I am sooooo envious of the number of races you guys have to pick from!
Check out our listing of tri's:
http://www.triathlon.ab.ca/content.php?id=105

In July, if you don't do a half iron distance, there are no race options in or around Edmonton. In August, there is 1 women's only and 1 sprint/oly/half. Talk about options

Why not come to Grimsby on July 20th (Trisport Subaru series)? It's closer than Welland. I am told that with the exception of one hill (possibly monster cough cough but I haven't seen it), the bike is flat as is the run and the water is shallow and the swim course runs parallel to the shore.

I'm planning on doing it.

I would take around 2-2.5 hours to get to the Chemong Lake area from Brampton. I would come from the cottage so it's about about 90 minutes for me.

The Grimsby one that Maria mentioned would be less than an hour for you.
