Saddle Sore....OUCH!

Postby a_beacher » Mon May 03, 2010 7:11 am

Hi guys,

I've never had a saddle sore before but I developed one riding in the rain this weekend. So, how do I get rid of it?
Any product recommendations for treatment &/or prevention?
It hurts like the dickens! :help:

Chamois cream for prevention (get it from your LBS). Diaper rash cream for a cure.

I don't cycle but this sounds like good advice.
I just bought some Chamois Butt'r (brand name) from a LBS to give to a friend who's training for his first IM. LBS guy told me it's very good and popular (not cheap tho' :( ). My friend Marc is giving it a two thumbs up rating.

Would this be the same as Body Glide? I used that on the weekend but...obviously, it didn't work so well. LOL

No, not body glide. Just ask for Chamois cream at the LBS, they'll know what you're after. There a several brands, with not much to choose between them but I like Assos.

+1 on the Assos. I prefer it compared to the Chamois Butt'r.

DZ Nuts is supposed to be good as well but I am not sure where to find it in Canada.

I use Bag Balm.

Bag Balm is a medicated cream created in 1899 with the purpose of soothing cow udders from the milking process. The manufacturer specifies that this product is for animal usage only. Nevertheless, over the years humans have had great results treating dried, irritated or chapped skin.

My personal take is not as thick and the anti-bacterial agent. Not sure if the Chamois Butt'r has the bacterial agent.

Ok...I've been to 2 bikes stores and they only carry Chamois Butt'r. I may just buy this stuff if I can't locate the Assos. or go to Lee Valley and by Bag Balm.
I'm going to stay off the bike for an extra day to see I can heal things. I can't afford for it to get worse and keep me off the bike. I have 5 weeks until the Ride and plenty of training to go.
Thanks so much for the advice.

I use the diaper rash cream (generic zinc oxide ointment in a large jar) as both prevention and cure. It works really well. The only down-side is that it's white, so it can leave marks on clothing if you're not careful.

I bought Asssos once (in Lake Placid, I think). Ladies, be careful where you put it as it has menthol in it and can burn! :o

The upside is that I already have an open jar in every bathroom and bedroom in the house and its already smeared over everything I own.

(YMMV)
