Too bad Carla, recover well. Aid stations can be treacherous places in an IM... :(

I changed the title of the thread because Carla is just so freaking awesome that I know NOTHING is going to keep her down for long. You ARE Ironman, Carla. You don't need a finish line or medal to prove that.

Hi

Short story - very disappointing day.

Longer story - Decent swim -a bit slower due to the freshwater and no wetsuit, but i was ok with it. I got kicked in the mouth/face on the return trip before the canal which shook me up and really hurt like a mofo (my top teeth took a jarring) but i didnt thunk much of it. Got through transition and i was really starting to enjoy the bike. It was a beautiful course and i was getting into a good zone. I hit 20mile just under an hour - but i wasnt working too hard and was feeling good.

I was following a cyclist as we entered the aide station and i believe it was a combination of him braking and a volunteer stepping out and i slammed on my brakes and ended up flying over my handlebars. My chin took the brunt of the impact and i got some pretty good roadrash on my right forearm. I ripped my gloves and the medic came running up right away. He took me to the tent and intially thought id be able to continue. Until he really looked at my chin and said i needed sutures. Between hearing that and getting very light headed and queasy, the writing was on the wall that my day was done.

Ride to the hospital in an ambulance, ct scan and internal and external sutures, $1100 later, then return to the race site to hand in my chip and get my gear bags. It is what it is. Im sad, disappointed, upset and am grateful it wasnt worse than this.

Thanks for checking in.
C
