I set my goal for this race in November last year, I wanted a Silver medal, sub 2:15 gun time. It would be my Spring 'A' race.
I planned to be pretty much right on pace from the start (4:30/k), then hammer it in for the last 10k. Things in the first 10k didn't go as planned, I started out too slow for an aggressive goal and had to start my race against the clock around 10k instead of 20k.
Start - seeded back too far, lost time crossing the line and couldn't get up to the speed I wanted that deep in the pack
5k - there's HCiD, say "Hi" and continue on my way
8k - there's Nick, say "Hi" and he lets me know I pretty far behind my goal at this point.
10k - 46:27 - 4:39 pace - Not good I'm 1:27 behind, I need to start racing now and pick up the lost time, an additional 10 seconds under my goal pace for the next 10k to catch up. I'm not going to make this easy on myself
15k - 1:08:22 - 4:23 pace for last 5k (0:52 behind goal) BJH informs me the little blue guy (Fizz) is just ahead of me
20k - 1:30:22 - 4:24 pace for last 5k (0:22 behind goal) I've been streaming by runners since the start, the hills have started, now I need to lay it all out, there are No Limits today, I will make my goal.
25k - heading downhill picking up speed and momentum for the big hill, pass the Tiger and burn up the hill, I can see Fizz ahead of me now.
27k - the hills are over, I'm starting my push to the finish, I catch Fizz and tell him to draft off me, I didn't look back after that. My hands are completely numb, I need two hands to squeeze my water bottle to drink out of it
29k - one more K to go, NO Limits, leave it out there!! I'm checking my pace and time pretty often now. I see LoveTheHills cheering outside Copps. I'm going to do it!!
30k - the finish 2:13:58 gun, 2:13:15 chip - 4:17 pace for final 10k (1:02 ahead of goal)
I could barely accept my medal I had to get the lady to hang it over my arm, I couldn't feel my hands, and I had gloves on. So cold that they were painful, but eventually that went away. Saw my happy family at the top of the escalator, that was the real finish line for me, Kylar took his medal, I changed their diapers and life was back to normal again.
Nice to see a lot of Maniacs have great runs as well today.
That was probably the best race I've run, 3:29 negative split. I haven't even downloaded my Garmin yet, I've been peeing silver since Sunday!
I got my Silver.

I am so glad you got your silver! I hardly recognized you, as you have gooten so thin! I'll have to ask Dgrant what the expression was that he used to describe your diet regimen...

My heart was in my throat reading your race report...and I knew you met your time! Whew, that was intense. Awesome race Rob! It was so exciting to see you jet by me just outside of Copps.
Way to leave all out there and go after your goal.
You are such an inspriation!

Wow Robbie wow. You continue to amaze. Your progress is remarkable. What a course to have to run negative splits on. To be racer guy and daddy guy, that's just makes it twice as amazing.

Well Rob, we had a slightly challenging start to the day, our Tolman gang still made it through yet another race. Any stresses/challenges completely vanished when the boys and I saw your determined face on the big screen in Copps and then your entrance into the stadium. I immediately broke into tears when you raised your arms in the air to cross the finish line. I was so proud and yelling like a "maniac" to the boys, "there's your daddy!! He beat his goal!!!" Both Kylar and Kaedon were clapping too. Now, watch out London, watch out Boston!!!!!!
It was a pleasure to finally meet so many maniacs, sorry K & K were not really in a visiting mood by the end of the day so we couldn't chat much. You all did a really great job!

Great effort, Rob. It was nice to meet a new maniac at 8K into a race. What I will remember the most is that I was in front of you for 8K!!! And then, there he was.... gone. I was just trying to help you estimate your effort since the 2.20 bunny had already waltzed past me.
That was a great race to be able to chase down a silver medal (which is based purely on gun time) from that far back. You certainly earned it in spades.

Rob, it's amazing that you pulled off that kind of negative split on the Bay course. It's shows that you have the patience and toughness to run a good Boston.

Congratulations Rob, that's a great race. You're in great shape right now and you'll likely qualify for Boston at London. I don't think it's too bad to be about a minute behind your goal pace at the halfway mark. It's pretty rare to hear about someone who blew a race because they started too slowly. As a result, you paced very well, at least in my opinion. Making up a minute over 15-20 km is not that hard, it's a long way to go. At any rate, most of the time you lost was in starting too far back, which makes your pacing even better. All the best at London.
