With a wonky achilles, I thought for about 10 seconds about not doing this race before Boston in 3 weeks. I wanted to do it to practice my race preparation and test the wonky achilles out to see if I should still go for my goal of sub 3:00 in Boston. I'll let you guys tell me if my goal is still a realistic goal.
Up at 6am, ate, kissed luvmybabies and out the door by 6:30. Stop for coffee and get to Hamilton before 8:00, nice and early. Head into Copps to hangup with the RM crowd and get the rest of me ready to go. Rehearse the race plan a few times, start 4:30 pace, move up to Marathon race pace 4:16 cruise that until 20k then either stay there or drop the hammer through the hills. My goal was 2:05-2:10, I'd be fine with anything in that range, I thought closer to 2:10 was realistic.
20 minutes to race time, head out do ~2k warm up and make my way to the start, got in about 10 back.
Starting Zone
The gun goes off I get through the start and a guy beside me slams to the ground, Ouchie!! I take the start easy, and hit Marathon race pace without my effort.
The EdFizz Zone
Started getting bored around 5k and EdFizz pulls up beside me, cool, we chat and stay at that pace, all of a sudden we are at 15k. Time flew by that was fun, he kept me at a comfy pace and I helped him bank a bunch of time so he decided to take it easy before the hills start. I pull away at the same pace.
The $10 Zone
18k the hills start, I stay on pace, I felt fine, achilles has been there, I can feel it a bit tight but not sore. ~19k saw purple piece of paper on the ground, "hey that was a 10 dollar bill", of course I stopped backed up and snatched it up. I'm sure that was planted by the race director. OK back on track.
Hammer Zone
20k I feel a burst going down hill, and I stay with it and that is when the hammer fell. I started passing people through the hills, ups and downs, I was feeling very strong at this point. Long down hill before the Big hill, saw MiniT and IronGirl, yelled at them, hopefully I didn't scare them. Passed about 5 people going up the Big hill, that hill is getting smaller after charging up the Grange Hill so many times.
The Final Kick Zone
3k to go, man the wind is in my face again, you would think for a round course the wind would be at our back at some time, but I don't remember if it was. Anyway lets finish strong, you can see Copps from a long way off, it seems to move away from you as you get closer. At last I was outside sprint by a couple more and finished. I enjoyed that training race, it seems to like me too.
