A good try at Blue Nose
A good try at Blue Nose
This was my spring "A" race. I'd registered last year, but due to an injury, had to use the "no sweat" registration policy and deferred to this year. Blue Nose 10km 2005 was my first race ever, so it meant a lot to be running this one today.
I'd been anxious about this race all week. The weather gods were kind to us today. It was sunny (and hot) for most of the race with a cool, strong breeze.
My strategy today was to push it a little from the start and see how I made out, and take walk breaks every 2 km. I was breathing a bit heavy right from the start, but I hung on to the pace at about 6:30-6:45 per km. I didn't wear my garmin, so I could only judge by my lap button and the km markers that I saw. (Some were turned in the wind, so I didn't see them). Some of my walk breaks were every 3km (not a good idea afterall).
At the 10.5km marker, I was on track for just under a 2:20 finish. I don't know if realizing that screwed with my head, or what. But shortly after that, I started taking more walk breaks, especially on the hills. By 16km, I realized I'd have to run 6 minute kms to hit my time. I did it for 2km. By 18km, I was spent.
I finished in 2:23:49. (30 seconds faster than my "training" run in MTL).
I didn't hit my goal time, but I had NOTHING left in me by the end of the race. I tried to push it harder from the start, and I just wasn't in the shape today to pull it off. I'm ok with that. I had a lovely day, met some new maniacs, and learned from it.
Now to ice the ankle/foot and rest up for CTRR next weekend.

Glad you had such a wonderful day. It sucks when things don't go perfect, but it was nice to see that you were able to identify so many wonderful aspects of your race. I am so used to hearing runners who, after blasting through a course in no time at all, and surpassing their pb's by a country mile, recite a list of complaints about what went wrong. Ugh!! Takes all the fun out of running! Congrats on accomplishing today what the great majority of Canadians cannot do!! Can't wait to hear about your next race.

Great job Ang! I strongly suspect Bluenose is a fair bit tougher than Montreal so you did great.
Now rest up for CTRR. That is where you will have your "A" result!

Way to hang it out there, Angela. You can only give 100% on the day and you did that. And a good run, to boot. Now, rest up for the real event next weekend.....

That's a good effort, Ang. It sounds like you gunned it a bit too early, but you still finished fairly strongly, leaving it all out there. Now rest up.

I actually noticed the photographers on the course this time too! Let's hope that I get some good photos out of it!
I actually came through the chute just as the wheelchair participant came through, and she was getting lots of attention, so I may be in her pics.
I have weird pains today - my back and sole of my foot. The rest of the pains are somewhat normal.
