Great day at Mtl HBC Run for Canada

Postby sister miller » Tue Jul 01, 2008 5:48 pm

Woke up to beautiful, sunny morning (18 degrees) - perfect running conditions. Intention was to get to race site about 30 min before the start. Things did not go smoothly - forgot the sunglass (passed on it), forgot the cell phone (went back home to retrieve it), half way done the block, forgot the water/gatorade water bottle (may a U-turn, passed on it and may another U-turn to head on down). Once at the Old Port, there were also parking issues to deal with. Finally arrived at the Start about 10mins prior. Too much stress!!

This was my third HBC run and goal was to better my 10K time. At Mont St-Bruno about 2 weeks ago, I missed the PB by 17 secs.

Race started off well with my first km at 5.47/km, faster than what I would normally do. Next 4 km to the half way mark were pretty evenly paced. It also got warmer with the sun and heat. Reached the 5km marker at 30:30 which is faster than I expected. Usually, I would do better on the second half but not today with the heat. Although I was able to maintain an even pace. Did not have the pleasure of chasing down runners on the second half like I would normally do. Heart rate throughout the race was constantly over 180 which was a little too high for my liking and therefore did not want to push it too much. Finished in 1:02 - a PB by 3.30 mins. Goal achieved. I had a great time. Beautiful finisher metal.

The other great highlights of today was high-fiving Dr Sonia twice (did not see her at the finish) and meeting and chatting with Sanders. Also, a big thanks to Sir Crash for coming down and taking the great pics!!!

All in all, it was a GREAT day for run.

My training log

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

"There are two types of injuries that we older runners get: those that we can run with and those that we can't. And if you're over 30 and don't have one or the other, you aren't training hard enough." - Younger Legs blog

Congrats on your well deserved PB!!! :D Perfect running weather as you said! I still can't believe you recognized me so quickly! Great to see you again, even so briefly, I couldn't leave my position until the last racer had came in.

Congrats on the nice PB. Sometimes all the distractions keep our minds off the race and keeps the nervousness away. Sounds like you put it all aside and just went out and got the job done.
Good for you.
Happy Canada Day.
