Tred's Mtl HBC Run

Postby Tred Miller » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:14 pm

Simple goal this year was to finally break the 50 min barrier. Missed it by 9 seconds here at the HBC run last year. Other than Mt. St-Bruno 10k 2 weeks ago, have not ran outside since NCM in May. Did a 48 min 10k on the treadmill last week. Now if only I can do the same today.

Started the race at a comfortable 4:42 pace for the first 2km. Saw Dr. Sonia and made my way to say hi and give high five. Decided to run with the pack of runners around me until the turnaround. At 5km mark, check the garmin and saw the pace had fallen off to 4:56/km. Do not panic; can still make it under 50. At the 7km mark, avg. pace was now at 4:59 and I was starting to get tired. Not sure if it was the heat or just the lack of outdoor running. After a quick stop for water and another wave to Dr. Sonia, decided to give whatever was left on the final 2km. The final 500m, I was like a car running on gas fumes. There was nothing left in the tank. Could not even wave to Sir Crash near the finish. Official clock was now past 50 minutes. Posted result was 50:58 but no chip time. It was not until I got home and checked the internet that I found my time: 49:44. A small PB of 25 seconds but glad to have broken the 50 minute barrier.

Post race included finally meeting and chatting with Sanders and then doing the 3km walk. In the end, a very enjoyable day.

Way to go - that 50 barrier is a tough one to crack. Sub 5:00/km is a very sweet thing. Congratulations

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Outstanding job breaking the barrier!! :D
Landmark numbers may drive us nuts sometimes, but when we break through them, the feeling of achievement is virtually unmatchable.
