Not Since Moses (Well Not Since Last Year)

Postby q » Tue Jul 08, 2008 11:41 am

What a great day!

This course is awesome. But I'm already sure you have heard that.

This is my second time tackling this course. This year they decided to run in it reverse order though. I'll be honest. I think I like the mud near the end instead of near the beginning.

Anyhow, I tried to get some good RM promo material, holding the race sign with a Bike Boy and and another guy. Lots of pictures were taken, so who knows maybe we'll get a new maniac or two...

Life has been a little uncertain lately, so, yes, I could have been more rested, and run a bit more in the last few weeks, but that didn't happen. Plus finally ontop of all that, a slight nagging back pain decided to nag today.

Anyhow, we count the countdown, and off we go... Um, why is there not anyone around me????

The winner, lead right from the gate, and he is going way, way too fast. The guy in second has a bit of a lead on me, but looks intent on catching the leader. So, that's it. I don't bother looking at the mass of people assumingly on my heels. But I just settle into a pace that my back will allow. Frig' 3rd? No way on the planet I was going to hold onto 3rd! So, I decided to take it easy when we hit the mud.

So, we hit the mud, and Bicycle Boy passes me. He's on fire. Really, he is rocking it. Good on him. Several other people also pass me in the mud. But no worries, it's really easy to mess yourself up in this stuff, I'm happy with my place and pace.

Moose Island went by super fast. 25:05 for 5K Yikes... too fast I thought!

The lack of wind this year meant about less water on parts of the course. Last year, what was mid-thigh, was only mid-shin on me this year. Still I walked it. Maybe I need to work on running through the water, but I find that kills my energy level quickly. Anyhow, I lady passed me here, as I was walking. Oh well...

Anyhow, onto Long Island, over the loose rocks and through the keyhole. A guy passes me as I am being careful on the loose rocks...

Into the mud mogels. People are finding these tough, but I am not really, my long strides are hitting where I want them to.

I round the corner of Pinnacle Island and walk the small bit of seaweed covered rocks. Too close to the finish to write myself off now.

Back over the mogels and I see Lonerunner. A quick cheer as I go by her .

Back through the keyhole and I see Angela and exchange a quick "Hi", but I also see the guy who passed me the first time through the keyhole. Only about 300 meters left, but I hammer it in for a strong finish. I smoked the guy who passed me, finishing a good minute ahead of him.

Anyhow, I blame the lack of wind and sea-water this year, and nothing else for the 6 minute PB.

Afterwards, touring the island's quaint lodgings, it's awesome vistas and hanging out with maniacs on the beach waiting for our ride. It was all good.

This race is a must do for me every year. The only sad part is that I have to wait a year before I can do it again. (Although next year, I may just do the run with a camera.)

Thanks for reading.

Oh and it was also great to meet JaccSprat!

Great job Brendan! Thanks for putting me on to this puppy!

BTW, I brought your knee ice pad all the way to Five Islands and didn't get a chance to give it to you.

Good on ya Brendan!

As much of a water-lover (especially the ocean) as I am, I'm still not convinced I wanna run through mud-flats... why do you suppose I like swimming so much? I've been known to swim with my belly hitting the ocean floor just to avoid putting my feet in the stuff... And really, I'm not sure my feet would know what to do in running shoes on the ocean floor!

Maybe next year I'll come along for the ride, or volunteer or something...

I must agree with the others.....its not the wind or the water that earned you the PB.....it was watching me run at RumRunners....and seeing that girl beat me that gave you the extra push to stave off the humiliation!!!

Well done.....and you are SOOOOOO welcome!!

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.

Ang, loading boats is what I do. Is it any surprise I stepped (literally) and helped to get them turned around? What you did miss though, was just how FAST the tide came in. It was truely amazing, not minutes after you left we had to abandon our spot and seek higher ground. Even the big rock I was drying my shoes on disappeared in a matter of seconds. That was truely impressive.

See you next year!
