I Paced A Girl And I Liked It.
I Paced A Girl And I Liked It.
So, um, yeah, the rumours are true. I ran a the 2nd Lung Run 5K on my "coffee break" from work Sunday. Luckily the race begins about a mile from work, in fact the first turn around is at the main gate area. So, after getting up really early (way too early.... I had to pack a running bag, since I had to wear work clothes to work) and I had got in a little later than I had planned in the evening. (Casino = $$$$$ = ).
So, I get dressed in 5 seconds flat, and then my warm up was to jog from work to the start line.
Anyhow, I ended up, in the corral beside none other than the little curly haired girl, from some of my other race reports this year. Yeah, I KNOW!!! So, here I am just looking down at the tips of my running shoes thinking of something to say and off goes the air horn.
We're off like a rocket, and after the first turn a few 100 meters into the race, I decided I am going to pace her. Seconds after that I felt a little dry in the mouth. (I should have hydrated, in the good way, the night before). So I hear the beep of her garmin at the first K. 3:55!!!!!!
GOOD GRAVY! Way too fast for me, I haven't run this fast in months, if ever...
But, for some reason, I couldn't let the curly haired girl pull away. I stayed right on her... heels...
So the second K was a 4:10. That was still way too fast of a pace...
Things were going by way too quick. I felt a noticable lack of energy at roughly 3.5K but with that little bit of distance left what are you going to do... I passed a couple of people in the last K, and one guy (probably in my age group...grrr.) passed me.
Anyhow, I tried for the strong finish. Although I was really glad when it was over. It was then, I walked over and I finally had something witty to say
I was 14 seconds slower than last year, but the last 2 months have been kinda nuts and my "training" for lack of a better word, has indeed suffered. Plus I probably did go out a little too fast. I thought I could do better, last year, I had a hurting calf, this year I was undertrained, but healthly, still I thought maybe a PB was in order.
A couple of stats to show how fast the field has become...
In '07 I ran a 21:22 which made me 22nd out of 125 (15 runners were sub 20)
In '08 I ran a 21:36 which made me 47th out of 179 (30 runners were sub 20)
I still haven't figured out the 5K thing yet. But, squeezing it in during a coffee break from work, nor gambling to the wee hours of the morning probably the night before didn't help.
Oh well, next time...

Great job Q, although I thought I had already read your report in Lonerunner's thread.
