Jaimer's Army Half (aka Jo-Jo saves a soldier!)
Jaimer's Army Half (aka Jo-Jo saves a soldier!)
So I should have been better prepared for this race. I knew that I hadn't trained enough, through a combination of work stuff and my own laziness, but does anyone else ever have that tiny voice in the back of their head saying "maybe everything will come together and I'll do really well anyway"? That's how I felt about this race. I hadn't trained enough, but figured what the heck, maybe the stars will align.....
Things went really well off the start line. As usual I had to reign myself in from sprinting the first km, then I settled into a reasonable 5:30-6:00 pace for the next 12km. I started to slow noticeably km(s) 12-15, and by kilometre 16 I was running what I thought was "REALLY FAST!", until I looked down at my Garmin and saw that the "really fast" pace I was setting with my sore and tired legs was actually hovering between 6:30 and 6:40...Up until that point I had been holding onto my hope of PB despite no training, which would have been anything under 2:06. I realized that at the pace I was going, there was no way in heck I'd finish near that time, it would like be more like 2:15, and my absolute worst time ever, but I continued chugging along. At the end of 17km, who should appear at my right-hand side, but Jo-Jo!! Always exciting to see a Maniac during a race, particularly when you're suffering
As anyone who read Jo-Jo's report knows, she wasn't having the greatest race either. By that time I was in serious pain, and so we shared our horror stories with each other. She told me that she thought it was fate that we had run into each other while we were both having disappointing races, and she said she would like to run with me to the finish line. Now knowing that Jo-Jo is a MUCH faster runner than me, I was honoured. She did absolutely all the right things during those last 3km. She ran just ahead of me and to the right, so I could always see her just a few feet away, but not feel as though she was slowing her pace to me TOO much
For the final km I tried to stretch it out, but it was like stretching out an already stretched rubber band, and I don't think I actually went any faster. Jo-Jo took my hand and dragged me across the finish line anyway It was a fantastic way to finish, and in the end my time was somewhere in the 2:07 range, really not bad all things considered! I shudder to think what my time would have been had Jo-Jo not been there to shove my a$$ through!
All-in-all a great day, with great support from a great Maniac! This is actually the second time that a Maniac has helped me finish a race (Dr. Sonia!) and each time has really made a difference for me. Special thanks to Jo-Jo "supporting the troops" in every sense possible!!!

It was a great moment to see you and Jo-Jo cross the finish line! It was such a fantastic race and all you soldiers were quite inspirational. Congratulations!

I can't think of a better way to finish my first Army Run than crossing the finish line with a solider I know. Very cool.

Hey chicka-licka!
Work stuff always gets in the way of your training for you Army folk...I know...I hear a lot of b!tching about that here! I'm glad you could tough it out. I'm glad you found a new feisty drill sergeant to drag your skinny @ss across the finish.
(I'm thinking Jo-Jo needs to be bestowed with an honorary rank of Master Warrant Officer) She certainly acts like a Troop Sergeant Major...keeping the general Maniac population in line, helping the new ones and giving the old grizzly veterans a kick in the behind when needed.
Anyway....you and I already know how awesome Jo-Jo is...but sometimes I think you doubt how awesome you are too.
I know you've been through a lot in the past year...so I want you to know that I'm very proud of you for pulling up your bootstraps and pushing through....even if you think it was all Jo-Jo...I know it was at least 60% attributable to your hard-headedness....er....I mean....stubbornness....er...no, I mean ability to stay focused on the task at hand.

Kara...what you wrote is so totally what I was thinking on the race course with Jaimer. BUT it was 100% Jaimer that got her to the Finish...that girl had a steely eyed soldier glare out there as she focused on the task at hand that was a little daunting

Great job pulling it through on a tough day. No matter how you got to the finish line, you got there! That's the important part! Good company is hard to find sometimes, especially on the race course, so thank your lucky stars you and Jo-Jo found each other out there. As Andy said, misery does love company, ESPECIALLY on a race course! Rock on!

Great run, Jaimer! Way to run through your problems, pick it up and finish strong, with a little Orange help along the way. It was great to finally meet you, albeit briefly, in the finish area.

It is pretty magnificent to cross the line with someone special. I've only run three races - two on my own, and the third with my cousin. Crossing the line with her at 2:20 on her first half marathon was just as rewarding as when I crossed the line at my first half in 1:54 - more so in many ways!
