Orillia Snowflake 5km

Postby DougG » Sun Jan 11, 2009 5:27 pm

Well despite wanting to stay warm at home with my coffee, I ventured to Orillia for this cool (pun intended) race.
It didn't seem THAT cold when I got there - wrong! It was around minus 16, but hey, the sun was out right?! This unique series has 4 races - you've read Flexrun's reports - and this is the final one. It was a small crowd, when compared to the usual races (maybe 50 people). But everyone was friendly. I was able to meet flexrun in person, which was great. I knew he would be at the front, while I would be somewhere behind
My plan was to treat this as a training tempo run. That was my plan. Then we started. The route started along the waterfront and went through some nice neighbourhoods. Did I mention how much snow Orillia has? :shock:I went out way too fast and it wasn't long before I was gasping for air  but I managed to slow into a fairly steady pace.
Anyway, it was a challenge keeping certain body parts warm (my face was frozen!), while other parts were sweating. Footing was a real challenge, there was a lot of ice along the road.
I ran with no iPod or watch, and the only marker I saw was at 3k, but I was struggling...a lot  C'mon I said, it's only 5k. Nevertheless I trudged on until finally I saw the finish line. Did I mention that many people passed me? Anyhow I chugged along until I crossed the finish line ..damn I was tired! There were a few people hanging around cheering, including Flexrun, when I crossed, which was great.
We were timed - no chip - and there was no clock for us to see. I was afraid to ask for my time   When they told me I was shocked...really? Wow. My time was 29:36, I beat my (modest) target by 24 second! :D I was pleased!
After we gathered at the local Legion for snacks, hot coffee :D and awards. I had the pleasure of sitting with Rick (flexrun) and his family, and had a great time. They are great people.
There were some fast times - under 18 minutes, in those conditions  Wow. Most people seemed to be around 20-24 minutes.
It was a fun morning, I am glad I did it. :D

edit: I just checked the posted results, my time was 28:35  :D
woo hoo!

Racing a 5k in -16 temperatures seems like it could be hard on your lungs. Good job on beating your expectations. Sounds like you had lots of fun.

Congrats

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!
