HCmD's Disney's Goofy Challenge Report

Postby HCcD » Mon Jan 12, 2009 9:55 pm

Well, what can I say ?? The Goofy Challenge was definitely a challenge, considering that I was experiencing some achilles issues ... The Donald 1/2 Marathon turned out to be a nice tempo effort, in an attempt to reduce the amount of damage to my achilles, in order to get me through the Mickey Marathon, the following Day ...

The Donald Half Marathon

I knew that I had to save some of myself and reduce the amount of effort in the Donald, in order to get me to the start line of the Mickey, the following day ... Favoring my achilles from the get-go, I opted to run The Donald at a nice tempo post ... feeling my achilles, I ran the Donald strategically ... Otherwise, it was not much to talk about ... running through the Magic Kingdom and back to Epcot ...

Ended up finishing in a time of 1:48:29 and 779 overall
out of 12,434 finishers ...

The Mickey Marathon

The Mickey Marathon did not go so well ... My achilles was really acting up, and could barely walk without a limp, let alone having to run ... I knew it was not going to be the best day to race, but more of an adventure and making the most of this experience and decided to have fun and enjoy the experience ... Ended up bring my camera and took advantage of the photo opportunities, when available ...

You know you are having a not so good day, when the 4:00, 4:15, 4:30 and 5:00 hour pace bunny passes you before the 10-15K mark ... :?

Ended up taking about 12 stops for the bio-freeze at the med tents along with a copius of photo shoots in all the theme parks, where possible, and had the best time of my life, considering running, let alone racing, was not a possibility on this day ... Final time was 5:26:59 and 9289 overall out of 14,940 Finishers ... :?

I was pretty well walking and shuffling over the final 25K of the course ... but, with a time goal out of the picture, it gave me the opportunity to enjoy the moment and experience of a life time...

It was totally awesome, running through the four theme parks, Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios ....

The Race Retreat option would definitely a bonus ... access to an enclose confort with a pre and post race brunch ... photo shoots with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Pluto and Goofy, before and after both races was worth it, alone ... along with access to private Massages, post race, and change facilities and port-a-potties ...

Photo slide show ... http://s85.photobucket.com/albums/k46/hcid/Disney%202008%20Race%20Weekend/?albumview=slideshow

And, was it worth it ?? Absolutely, totally worth it .. and, even registered again for the 2010 Edition ... where I plan to have my redemption on the Mickey Marathon Course ....

This is what it is all about ....

Totally nuts, but fun race Andy! Congrats on toughing it out!
Nice way to break the monotony of the winter months with a back-to-back race, ya maniac! Now go get your achilles fixed. Spring season is just around the corner. :o :P

Great job out there. Sorry about your achilles, but it sounds like the marathon was probably 20x more fun the way you did it.

Plus, you've got a whole year to recover and plot your revenge on the course.

Half - 1:20:00 (Apr 26 - Hartwell)

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

I had a great time in Disney as well. Little known fact, that no Disney "Cast" member will tell you about is that you are only a 15-20 minute walk from the start line at Epcot if you are staying at either of the Port Orleans resorts (although French Quarter is closest). They don't want you wallking on the side of the roads in the dark, but no one stops you. Would save getting up at 3 AM each day. I stayed at Port Orleans - Riverside and had no compliants.

I have to say Disney pulls off both races flawlessly. I was surprised at getting 3 long sleeve tech shirts. Loved running through the parks, but running in the dark through Magic Kingdom during the half was my highlight. During the marathon it was daylight, and still impressive. If you like big time marathons, add this to your list. Worth the price of admission.

Thanks for sharing. Great pictures and report. Real fun stuff...except for the injury. They should give you a commission because I think I'm going to take the family next year.

Yep, noticed that after the race, that the Start Line, was literally right across from the entrance to the Port Orleans French Quarter Resort   about the same distance, if not closer, than the walk from the Race Finish Area to the start line ... Could have just walked over the Overpass ..... would work well, if you did not need a sweat bag check, for afterwards, however ... :? :?

Sounds like you had a great time. Now all you have to do is take a bit of a rest in order to be at your best in 2009.

Hey - sorry about the whole achilles issue, but it is great to see that it didn't damper your spirits and that you'll be back next year to kick Goofy's @$$.

Rest / Recover / Heal up, you have - what? - another month till your next race :) ;).

See ya on the streets.

Congrats on your Goofy!! I saw how bad you were hurting on Saturday night and I am totally impressed with you being able to finish on Sunday. We were a team of RM walking wounded this weekend.

It was fun hanging out again! I am sure you may be seeing us in California in Sept.
