Doonst at Mississaga Half: getting older getting faster.

My "A" goal was sub 1:37, my PB 1:37:21. Believe it or not, I split the difference.
Nice day for running, cool but a bit windy. At last the wind was rarely right in our face, more often than not it was helping. The first 6 K were into it but that's when you're strongest. Nice course I guess but I didn't look at the fancy houses much, a little focused on the road today. Nobody has mentioned the hill at 10-11 K, it was as much or more than I expected. I lost a solid 30 seconds there, 5:05 vs 4:35 average pace. Yes there was even more downhill. My pacing was solid, I do think I ran a smart race. I was thinking at around 17 K that it was going pretty well, then turning along the lakeshore it got tougher to hold the pace. For the most part I did, but the 20th split was the only one over 4:40, other than "the hill". Graph to follow. The finish sure seemed to go on forever, it was only here that I knew that I had emptied the tank. Anyways the final was 1:37:14.8, or a 6 second PB. Very happy with that. Like dgrant the PB was on an uncertified course that measured 21 K flat on my Garmin; today it said 21.25 which is average for a certified course. Also that was almost 2 years ago; my only half last year (on that same course) I couldn't quite break 1:40. Also, my half time has always been my best according to all prediction charts. 17th out of 212 in my age group, 291 out of 4400 total. My half splits were crazy, like 48:36/48:39.
Great seeing the gang old and new after the race. Lots of PB stories to share. Absolutely heartwarming to see Lightning BQ, she surely earned it. Thanks to the jsmittys for the ride back to the start. Good racing!

That's some pretty fancy running there Doonst!
Let's see, a 6 second PB for an old guy, when age-graded is about ... HUGE!!
You're like a fine wine. Congrats Sheldon.

Like fine wine, Sheldon you appear to aging just right. As we run longer as in years, as well as more races it is a lot tougher to get those PB's. Take em anyway you can. Congrats on another great performance. Ya done us proud....

What she said!!!! Way to go. Good work on emptying the tank. Ya, that hill at 10k was brutal. And I think the markers were off there if I remember correctly. You keep getting faster and faster! 8)

your race pretty much mirrors mine. A PB is a PB - you ran a great race on a not so easy day.

BTW, i agree with you about that hill between 10/11 - it takes more out of you than you think.

Solid run. Keep that up and you'll destroy Egg Nog this year

Great run Doonst, and I don't even think you are in your best shape you could be, I think you could pick up 2-3 more minutes this year.

PBs are good.

I think that those markers were way off. 10 and 11k were very close together!

Well done Sheldon!!

Very true Robbie. That's the thing, my training has been quite light this spring and still I'm faster than ever. Check back in 6 weeks!

Makes sense to me: good base carrying over from last year, a bit of rest to tame some nagging aches, and a well-executed raceplan.

Congratulations  I am very impressed by your steady progress year after year. I agree with Robbie-T you have a great potential. I think just by not going so fast early in this race you would have improved your result today. You finish was amazingly fast still.
I impatiently waiting for the revenge at Sulphur Springs :)

Well, a PB while just "messing around". What happens when you get serious?? Congrats on a smart race.
